Whats the difference between wiring subs in parallel and series

Recommended Posts

I have two four ohm Kicker CompVR 12's Dual Voice Coils. Also have a Pioneer Gm- D8601 monoblock amp. I looked at the wiring diagrams on the Kicker website and noticed that there is two ways to get them wired to 4 ohms. One way being series and the other parallel. Will there be any difference?

Whats the optimal way to wire them?

why would you want to wire them down to 4ohm? Wire them in parallel to that amp for a 1 ohm load. Will match up nicely. Edit: if you wire to 4ohm you really wont have enough power to push them subs properly. 2_4ohm_dvc_1ohm.gif

It want harm it? The amp at one ohm supposedly does 800 watts, and the subs are rated for 400 each. Or will wiring them to one ohm make each one see 400 watts? Sorry if that's a dumb question haha

I could give you the long electrical engineering talk, but to put things simply:

Impedances in series will add up. Ztotal = Z1+Z2

Impedances in parallel are a little different. Ztotal = (Z1*Z2)/(Z1+Z2)

Alright thanks everyone. One last question. I run a wire from the terminals that aren't being used to each other?

Wire it like the diagram i gave you shows.

Alright so I got it all wired exactly like the diagram, and I go put them back in my car and now there is a constant beep noise. I have never had the noise there before. The only thing I changed was the wiring, and upgraded from 12 gauge THHN wire to 12 gauge SHCA OFC. I know constant noise can be from RCA's but why would it do it now?
