Every time one of my woofers has "blown" its been one coil on one sub (AA Mayhem's) and that coil doesn't even read on the dmm. no visible damage to coil either when reconing,....in other words tinsel failure... happened 3 times now

AQ3500.1

Interesting topic...

I don't have mayhems, but my subs are pretty similar. I'm running an 8k to them. Haven't blown them yet. What style leads do you have? Woven or are they sewn on top of the spiders?

might i suggest that some of these people catching their shit on fire had the gains set wrong? a 20db overlap and a heavy bass hand is a sure FIRE way to get things heated up. Especially if your box is ported and you are unloading the shit out of it because EXCURSION is so cool. Problem is, most people who "set by ear" don't even know how friggin' high it really is. They just turn it till it sounds good and go. Well if your shit is already clipping at 30 out of 60 but you want more bass so you turn it up to 40 or 45 what do you think is going to happen over a period of time? yup burnt tinsels and maybe a fire.

Set your shit up to where it CANNOT overdrive the speakers even at the highest clean point on the deck, don't unload your woofer by playing 20hz decalf in your 33hz tuned box.... and it shouldn't be an issue.

If you stay within the subwoofer (or any speaker's) power limits, gains set properly, playing within tuning you should never have a problem. I blame user error on almost every single case i have seen.

wonder how those leads are gonna affect sound quality if they start hitting against the cone

once you get a speaker moving so hard that its possible to make tinsels slap, you are already kissing "SQ" goodbye. :D

Don't get me wrong, as I smoke Marlboro Reds, but if I saw one more kid with that smug-ass look (Look at me I'm smoking indoors) on their face, I was going to shove that thing so far up someone's ass that they'd look like a hillbilly trying to understand quantitative prediction theorem.

You know why people are ass holes online but not in person? Because getting punched in the mouth hurts.

I tested an AQ 3500 and 3500.1 on a 15" Mayhem but never had the issue, I've tried. Coins still look brand new

Tell me...does this smell like chloroform to you?
