Got metered for the first time today. Input?

Not saying its not possible but no reason to get his hopes up. Takes the right box with the right subs facing the rght way.

I think its possible to jump from a 136.6 to a 140 with a box correctly built and designed for those subs. But to go from that 140 to 145 from double the power is not likely. I could see a 141-142 on 1200rms with a good box and a pair of 12s. Could see 145 from 2-3krms with subs that can take the power in n the right box and electrical to support it.

I've done low to mid 140s (142-143) with a single 15 and 2 12s on a 1500.1 bdcp. 12s should have been better but cause of flaws in the box design. Didn't have much for electrical at the time either. Was seeing 11.9-12.2v at the lowest during burps. Occasional 11.9-12.2 on music with certain songs for a split second. Voltage taking at the amp but usually stayed above 12.2 on music.

so is it possible yes is it worth to get your hopes up no.

Thanks for all the input guys. Hopefully I can decide on an amp under 2k watts to stay in the class I want to compete in.

The other thing is I need to go back and pay for some time to use the TermLab and test my box facing rear as well as different rear seat positions. I know it sounds a good bit louder with my box facing into the trunk instead of toward the cabin, but I use my car for work and always have to throw tools in it so its facing cabin right now.

Never been all that into SPL, but had a classmate back in high school that got into it. His first setup was four 10" 500RMS Eclipse subs in a fairly large sealed enclosure, probably 1.5cuft per sub, getting rated power. Heard he hit 143 something at COMP with it, so 136.9 off two 12's getting 600RMS doesn't sound too shabby. I could see them hitting 140dB properly powered.

Pretty much have to double your power to get roughly 3dB in gained output, so to go from 137 to 145, you'd be needing to bump up the power to a good 2500RMS, which those subs aren't likely to take. Well, maybe doing SPL burps.

Change out the enclosure for a larger one tuned a couple Hz below the vehicles resonance frequency and you'll get the most from the setup, but it'd be strictly for SPL, as the tuning would be quite high, like in the mid 50's or higher, depending on the car.

I've not ever been all that into LOUD myself, loudest setup "I" had was a 15" Kicker in a 34Hz tuned 3.5CUFT enclosure. Probably was capable of hitting in the 130's as well, but grew tired of it QUICK. Sounded like crap with most everything I listened to, with the only exception being Rap/Hip Hop.

Yeah I would make a couple ports that would be swappable so I could SPL and daily drive. I have never been into SPL either. This is my daily set up for music. Sounds good on all types, because I listen to all types of music. I wont be doing burps with any more than I give the subs daily at this point. But who knows, if I get the itch I might :)

Yeah, swappable ports sounds like a pretty decent idea, if you can implement it properly

IDK, maybe I've just not ever had the right sub and/or ported enclosure, but I've never had a ported setup "I" felt worked well with all of my music. Never really had a chance to sample other peoples setups with "my" choice in music, so I can't comment on weather or not such a setup exists. Still, it's all about preferences, not to mention all the variables such as enclosure size, tuning, placement, Sub's T/S Parameters, source signal quality, final impedance, quality of the gear used, not to mention how everyone's hearing differs.

I'm looking to get back into a ported setup, at least to give it another shot. Currently running Polk MM1240's in 1cuft GROSS enclosures, sound pretty decent, but just not quite right with my Rap/Hip Hop, which is but 25% of my music at best. Thinking of doing a dual enclosure setup, in which I have a sealed and ported sub setup powered off separate amps, which I can switch between depending on my music and mood.

You cab get up to a 3db gain from each of the following double power, double cone area, electrical, and box. At the end of the day I wouldn't expect more then a a 1db gain from Each of those.

right now your biggest gain from those subs will be the box though. That's just because going from .69cuft per sub to the 1.25-2cuft per they should have along with a proper port. Proper bracing will help to.

True, in a perfect world, 3dB gain is the rule of thumb, but we're dealing with other factors, such as loss due to cancellation between drivers and loss due to panel resonance.

Speaking of which, once can get a slight bump if they can deaden their ride properly. However, I've seen some of what goes on with doing such. add a little deadening, measure output, add some more, measure again, get a lower reading, remove what you just added. Quite monotonous, but if you're looking to squeeze out every .1dB you can, it can help.

But yeah, biggest gain is likely going to occur with a different enclosure. More power and placement of sub/port direction are likely next. I've heard of lots of little tricks and numerous factors, all I can say, it's not for me. Too much work for way more output than I'm needing, or even wanting. I'm fine with a daily driver that hit's upwards or 120dB. If I were into SPL drags, then I'm sure I'd be singing a different tune.

So why am I in the SPL section? Good question.
