JNells
I have a 2005 chevy malibu 2.2 ecotec, I live in northern Minnesnowta lol. I'm going to be upgrading my starting battery with an XS.. (Either 925 or 3400) But I've noticed the cranking amps on the XS is lower than my current regular battery... So I'm wondering if that will have a negative impact on cold daily start ups in our frigid winters. Thanks in advance Quote Malibu Build Log
SnowDrifter
Looking at your car: It takes a group 75 battery. 3400 w/ side post adapters would work. A 925 would be a bit on the small side IMO, measure the biggest battery you can fit. Just go out there with a tape measure and grab some dimensions. Then go on XS power's site and size it up to fit your needs. You could convert your side terminal cables to the top post variety if underhood space allows Quote ~~~~~~~~SAY NO TO PHOTOBUCKET~~~~~~~~ Snow's DD-1 tracks here: https://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/167433-snows-dd-1-tracks/ My take on OFC vs CCA: https://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/110381-things-that-piss-you-off-in-the-car-audio-world/?do=findComment&comment=2461444

But even with a 3400, would I see starting issues at -20+ degrees? We get extremely cold and frigid in winter here, and although car is mainly garaged at home, I just don't want to end up stranded. (This is my DD) Thanks in advance for your help Quote Malibu Build Log
SnowDrifter
Honestly I've never been in weather that cold. I couldn't tell you But I do know that AGM batteries are less prone to freezing. Multiple batteries would help. So would a couple caps. Or shoot... Not sure how much you want to get into this, but my car cranks over like it's on steroids running 14v Edited June 25, 2014 by SnowDrifter Quote ~~~~~~~~SAY NO TO PHOTOBUCKET~~~~~~~~ Snow's DD-1 tracks here: https://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/167433-snows-dd-1-tracks/ My take on OFC vs CCA: https://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/110381-things-that-piss-you-off-in-the-car-audio-world/?do=findComment&comment=2461444
TRON
It will be better than a wet cell. What I did was use one of those electric battery blankets, its like a 50w heated pad that wraps around the battery. Works great. Just not sure if the juice is fully worth the squeeze so to speak for this build. I'm looking into and doing some research on the ultra caps too.. From what I've read they look extremely promising. But I'm kind of noob when it comes to that... (Always thought caps were a waste) It will be better than a wet cell. What I did was use one of those electric battery blankets, its like a 50w heated pad that wraps around the battery. Works great. That's not a bad idea either... Ideally I would like to not have to use anything like that, but extreme weather calls for some extreme measures sometimes. Lake Superior is not friendly with us in the winter. 30+ mph winds and -60+ degrees with windchill at times. (Yea I question why I live here too) lol Quote Malibu Build Log
JNells
Had a minute to look it up and I do see the 3400 has the same cca as my current battery and if agm is better, I shouldn't have any issues. (Knock on wood) Thanks again guys! Quote Malibu Build Log
Nathan @ XSpower
The 3400 with a 551 iBar kit. Will be plenty of power and no issues in the cold. We actually have a company up in Canada that sees -20+ regularly in the winter that uses the 3400s in their machinery. Went ahead and purchased, and with results like this out of the box, I must say looking forward to running more XS Power in the future. XS FTW!!!
