Fusing between alternator and battery?

Recommended Posts

I don't run one on my Mechman. I called them to ask about this and they told me the decision was up to me. If it made me sleep better, then do it. Otherwise, no big deal. As others have mentioned, I have 300 amp fuses on my 2 runs of + to back batteries, then fuses off my batts to amplifiers (4 in total for sub system).

This is kind of off topic, but anyway... Make sure to ground the alt casing to negative post if running a Mechman though. They REALLY stressed that to me, just FYI...

I love car audio so much because I will never be done. I can never win, and I will never get it finished or perfect. It always has me coming back for more, I can never get my fill of it, but I get what I need.

i don't put a fuse there, but i take extra care in running power wire to keep it away from any moving or hot (exhaust) parts. Running the regulator without the battery connected is bad, and shorting out the battery is also very bad. Balance the risks and make your decision.

Cables and wires almost never fail; the terminations do.

I don't fuse here but run is less then 18 inches. Some with long runs to battery will fuse. I run Mechman here so I follow the directions what they said not to fuse.

I originally planned on running a fuse and bought one... but once I got it and saw it came with a 300A fuse and I didn't have the time or money to run across town to get a lower rated one, I just ran it without one. Works fine for me... hope my car doesn't catch on fire lol

  • 2 weeks later...

Copied from our web site ( http://www.ceautoelectricsupply.com/big3kitstop.html ):

FUSE THE CHARGE LEAD OPTION
Most OEM charge leads have a fusible link on them. Its purpose is to protect on-board electronics in the event that the regulator fails and causes "voltage run-away." Although this is quite uncommon, fusing the charge lead included in any of our kits provides the same protection for your larger than stock alternator.
When choosing this option, we'll include a Rockford Fosgate ANL Fuse Holder, a 100A / 125A / 150A / 200A / 250A / 300A fuse (your choice), and mounting hardware. In addition, we increase the length of the charge lead by 1 foot to allow you to choose a good mounting location for the fuse holder and still have a nice smooth run from the alternator to the battery.

I did put a fuse between my alternator and battery. It wasn't a particularly short run and made me feel better. I also did it for the same reason that snafu posted. Since there was a fusible link on the stock charging lead, I felt like I should just in case.
