Single wire alt?

Recommended Posts

My buddy has a 2007 Cadillac Escalade EXT running a dual alt setup and just got a new 370 amp Mechman Alt as the second alt. Our question is its suppose to be a single wire alt but what turns the alt on? We have it grounded with 0 gauge wire and we have it wired into the positive terminal on the battery. Any ideas guys?

as said above a one wire alternator has a self-exciting regulator, meaning that it has sensing circuitry for alternator rotation. As the alternator starts to spin, this circuitry connects the internal voltage regulator to the battery and turns the alternator on. When the alternator comes to a complete stop, this same circuitry turns the alternator off.

idk, but my 2nd alt has one wire coming out of the plug on it.....tapped that wire into the one on the plug going into the stock alt

Most likely in your case that wire coming out of it is a sense wire that got connected to your sense wire on your other alt.

A one wire alt, has no wires coming out of it, and the one wire that they refer too is the positive charge lead that gets connected to the alternator.
