What's your "danger voltage"?

Recommended Posts

Well... it's going to be different for some people. It's not a one voltage fit's all... If you have a 12v system, you won't want to see it go below 12v... That's when your car is struggling to get the power it needs to operate properly... So that would be the danger zone, anything below the voltage it's built for.

Most reputable brands are good down to 9v and up to 16v.

However if your amp is rated to do 500rms at 1ohm voltage at 13.5 then anything below that you wont come close to rated power.

I always hear people say voltage drop will fry your amp...so if I'm dropping to 12 or so could that wreck anything? I'm wired to 1 ohm on a saz 2000d.

It depends on the install and amp.

If that amp is rated for say 11v to 16v and you drop below 11 or close to you get into a higher risk area.

Or if you mount it in an area where airflow is low you can overheat it specially if running low voltage (more stress higher heat).

In the manual for the SAZ-2000d, it states:

Operating Voltage 10-18V.

So you can safely operate it at 10V.

But I would use an analog voltage meter that doesn't average if you're going to risk going that low.

I would assume this has a regulated power supply.

Keep in mind that a regulated power supply will want to output consistent power so at lower voltages it will draw more current which is even harder on your electrical which can in-turn cause your voltage to drop further.

Oh i know how a 12v system works I did take 3 years of electronics in High school hands on and some in college and also worked on cars in college an always got A's to B's in each class.

But oh well enough dealing with ppl who have probably not even lived as long as ive been into electronics!

Agreed with most of the other posts here. Anything under 11 is unsettling and that's when I'll back down. Although ideally above battery resting voltage is nice.

Under 12 and I turn it down.

For the elitists out there.. Not all of us can fit a bank of 10 batts and multiple alts on our vehicles so we do what we can.
