alt shutting off at idle?

hey guys. i just got done installing my mike singer 250 amp alt and xs power d3400 in my mazda 3 today. voltage is great except for at idle

voltage will be 14.2 or so while driving as soon as i stop its like the alt shuts off and my voltage drops to 12.7 roughly..

fans slow down which is annoying becuase winter is coming, but all my lights dim also. the second i rev a bit voltage drops right back up until idle speed again. lights jump back up and i can physically hear the fan speed up on my heater!!

any help would be greatly appreciated..

car is a 2007 mazda 3 sedan. 2.3L

alternator turn on is prolly to high for ur application, what is the engine rpm of ur idle? do you know crank pulley size?

alternator turn on is prolly to high for ur application, what is the engine rpm of ur idle? do you know crank pulley size?

idle is about 700 rpms. and no i dont know the crank pulley size

its bc your alt spins too slow. One solution is getting a SLIGHTLY smaller pulley.. which is also called an overdrive pulley. Im sure the pulley you have is smaller than factory, but.. Id hit up Mike asap.

This even smaller pulley will increase the alternator's rotor assembly rpm. In return, your alt will turn on and charge at idle. Now, keep in mind that there will be less belt contact (smaller area) with the alt's pulley... But priorities..

Anyway, shoot Mike a message. He wont leave you hanging.

Maybe see whats good with efFlako. Iirc he has a Singer in a Mazda 3.

Idle speed is below the turn on speed for the alt.

Options are:

Ignore it

New/different alt

Raise idle, which will reduce fuel economy

Smaller alt pulley, which has the potential of inducing/intensifying belt slip

Larger crank pulley: No belt slip problem, but other components on the belt will wear slightly faster. Also tend to be pricey. FWIW that's the route I took for my own vehicle

talk to company owner and get it figured out you paid for an alt that charges at idle so thats what ya should be getting for your money., if u have an aftermarket underdrive crank pulley on ur car then its prolly an issue of yours

THen rev higher when your sitting there...

or, see if mike can "help you" with better low idle performace.

I had a alt that would turn off at idle I would just rev it or put the car in neutral
