UBL - Mikes Lexus LS400, Walled, 4 x 18s, slammed, 13 batteries, snakeskin trim

Recommended Posts

Fold back the cone, cut out the spiders, all pretty self explanatory. I managed to salvage one woofer by carefully unpicking the glue on the surround and spider setup, so I can keep it for a 'worst case spare'

20140926_122832_zps1ec2ad2f.jpg

Here you can see clearly how the American Bass coils failed

If you look closely, it looks like they have a fiver spider suspension, not actually too bad

20140926_123034_zpsf00db962.jpg

This is the tricky part, trying to get all the jammed coil windings out of the gap without snapping them and then having it stuck in there.

20140926_123149_zps4a72582b.jpg

A bit of patience and it comes out, lots and lots of copper

20140926_123443_zps05dca514.jpg

Now I can go ahead and unscrew the spider sandwich plate, which is screwed down and a little bit of glue underneath, it came apart easy.

The new recones will be glued down, very solid

20140926_123828_zpsc67ee1c6.jpg

A pic of the spider plate, and old connection leads etc.

20140926_124007_zps8276cee9.jpg

The bare basket and motor assembly

20140926_115643_zpsd13eeeb2.jpg

Now I must clean off all the old glue/paint/soft parts and prepare the surface for the glue. a bit of patience and an angle grinder with a flap disc does the trick

20140926_133016_zps3286afc3.jpg

Basket all cleaned up, and also spider landing area clean too

20140926_133322_zps832e5000.jpg

I didn't want any affiliation with American Bass on my subs, so the logo must go!

20140926_121306_zps2e35dba8.jpg

A little bit bumpy, but it'll be fine

20140926_121446_zpscaf61bf3.jpg

A quick coat of paint, this colour is bad ass, copper brown with a purple flip

20140926_160454_zpsdea3fed4.jpg

All four of the subs chillin, ready to recieve their new bits...

As promised, here's the doors progress

I wanted the doors to look tidy and half factory still, once they're trimmed I think they'll suit perfectly.

Simon really showed out on this one :)

He's also doing some work in my trunk

These are very early pics, so yes it looks unfinished, it will look the same quality as my doors.

IMG_5053_zps116ed1c5.jpg

Just to make it look more than just a bunch of batteries and amps. I have left plenty of room so I can add or change amps later off down the track. I want it upgradable.

As promised, here are the 'finished' pics of the trunk

Obviously there is more work to come, it will be trimmed in a similar theme to the interior, and possible some plexi and simple lighting effects.

I just like everything looking neat.

So the old girl came home! smile.png

20141008_113208_zps07bdcd3a.jpg

Took her for a bit of a drive seeing as I had her out, she got some attention that's for sure. And that's without people even knowing it has a stereo.

Got my panel/paint priced it too so I now have a plan of attack. The panelbeater loved it!

I'm so happy with how it sits.

20141008_121522_zpsd4b6d2d2.jpg

Some more happy snaps of the rear end.

And the front doors, fit perfect, plenty of room, can't wait for trim.

From where we left off with the stripped woofers

Drilling out the direct connection holes to suit the upgraded cables

20141012_185419_zps7b0f719f.jpg

Once that's done, we can clean everything with parts cleaner, especially the prepped surfaces for the glue

20141012_185524_zpsb87991e6.jpg

Blow the whole lot out with compressed air, make sure everything's completely clean and also DRY!! Being dry is important or it will destroy your shims

20141012_185615_zps487f0f3e.jpg

The new drop in soft parts assembly.

Check out how much beefier that coil is compared to the original

20141012_185742_zps5ccaf191.jpg

20141012_185750_zps1868bb2f.jpg

Shimming the coil is very very important. Use bright coloured material so you don't forget it's in there. I use big long pieces so you physically can't put the dust cap on without taking them out. You will need to experiment with different thicknesses to get your particular sub spot on.

20141012_190320_zps29148c98.jpg

Always always always test fit the recone into the sub before putting any glue on, check everything lines up, check it without the shim in place also for any scraping or rubbing.

Having the shim material nice and tall means you can roll the top into a cone shape and slowly lower the coil assembly down over the top. The shim should be nice and snug so it should sit firmly in place as you slowly lower it into positon.

Check everything.

20141012_190415_zpsd4e3cca4.jpg

Drop it down to the final position. Check for scraping again etc. Check the coil has no side to side movement, it should be tight, but not completely locked up. This may take a while to sort out how much material you need to use. Take your time and get it right. If you put too much in, you won't be able to pull it out afterwards and you may jam your gap with cardboard! Nobody wants cardboard in their gap.

The only scraping you should hear is smooth voicecoil bobbin on carboard.

20141012_190453_zps3a79aba1.jpg

Put your adhesive down. These PSI recones were supplied with two different types of adhesives. A flexible rubber cement for the surround to basket, and what they labeled as 'CA' glue, a quick drying solid adhesive for the spider to frame, which requires spraying with activator.

These adhesive were terrible to use. The supplied bottles were too large for how much product was inside making it too difficult to squeeze the adhesive out neatly. Put on a generous amount, not too much that it will squish out the sides and make a mess, but obviously enough to hold it together with 4000w in it's backside. I was not happy with the supplied glues by themselves so I optied to add something else as well for security.

20141012_191236_zps3b2a4d6a.jpg

Drop your assembly back down carefully and clamp it down!! Make sure you align the tinsel leads to the frame. Because once it's down, you're stuffed!

Be careful with the clamps that they don't push the surround or spiders out of alignment. Do them offset.

20141012_191714_zps9d4c2fa9.jpg

Give it a good 12 hours to cure and you can remove the clamps. I then proceeded to fill the void space in the surround and also the spider landing with Loctite 480 which is my favorite smile.png

It's great stuff to use and always comes out neat smile.png

Last one in, also wired up the Crescendo something.something.800 (Don't know the model?) for the front speakers.

Great little amp, running the doors fully active, no external crossover, using the crossovers on the amp and worked very well. Everything is easy and simple to work on. Just the way I like it.

Labeled everything like usual. I like to know what wires go where and do what, so much better than messy junk. Especially helpful seeing as their is 8 pairs of speaker cables coming from the amp (Each speaker has its own run)

This amp will most likely get tucked out the way in the void space under the wall once I'm happy with the settings. Being class D it hasn't even gotten hot, but obviously it does fall over in the grunt dept being only 800wrms to the front stage. It's still fairly good sounding though, the fronts are loud and clean and the midbass actually moves air when the crossovers are wound down far enough.

20141023_130312_zps986e5074.jpg

Took her out for a bit of a drive, lots of good fun and even got a few demos in. Fronts are loud now so (in my eyes) the bass isn't that loud and I got a little silly with the volume knob, wanting more.

Got peer pressured from my trimmer to finish off the doors and boot. It's no show car but it presents neat and tidy, and also looks different to most other ground pounders which is what I was after. So I dropped them off and he had them done in a few days, he's a champ.

I've also done wiring the fronts up and driving the car a hell of a lot, very happy with how the fronts sound, even off limited power.

Broke some screws on a woofer, had to be the one in the most difficult spot of course. Funny thing was, I didn't even realise and kept the volume up, my buddy who was riding shotgun almost shit himself when he seen it jumping in and out the box. Thing still was LOUD! Which was funny, eaasy fix anyway

Cleaned up at a local comp.

What a blast showing it off at the state's biggest car show.

My score was 154.9dB on music averaged over 30 seconds with both front windows down. I do not test or rehearse my system, it was pretty much a song we were listening to the night before that we thought was cool. Last time the car seen the meter was the TRENDZ comp where it did 150.x I believe in the same conditions.

The comp on the weekend was motorvation, thank you to TRENDZ CAR AUDIO for assisting my entry, wouldn't be there without the guys. Kustom panel and paint shall receive thanks for repairing some minor panel damage and paintwork touch ups from the previous owner, a keen eye may have noticed them at previous events. This means the car was looking and sounding better than ever on the weekend.

Every event the car was entered it received first place. I am not a serious competitor but it is good to receive promising feedback.
