Engine temp hotter with new mechman 320 billet unit....

Recommended Posts

I gotmy mechman 320 billettech unit into my 84 ford mustang with a 92 5.0 engine and wired it all up,works great stereo hitting pretty hard, havent dropped the real amp in yet (5k). I have noticed since the install the engine temp seems to run hotter on the gauge and creeps up even more when bassing hard for longer periods of time.

wondering if this is normal? the car has not overheated or anything it just used to run around 1/3 on the gauge now it gets up over halfway. the radiator hose runs right across the top of the alternator and i do have some heat wrap around it there

If it is a stock gauge then the calibration might be off, i would use a quality temp gauge that has actual temp numbers on it.

The stock gauge could move a lot with just a minor temp increase, and unless you know where each mark on your gauge is at temp wise you would only be guessing what temp your actually running.

Something crazy but maybe your stock alt wasn't putting out enough juice to power some of the gauges correctly.. just a thought

The engine is working harder to drive the alternator. It will heat up a little more, but shouldn't get past the thermostat temp. If it's a tuned engine, additional cooling upgrades might be required

-Nick

really? holy shit then i should remove mine

its going to work a bit harder but nothing noticeable. 15hp at best and that includes from the stock so maybe 5hp more than stock. the alt is not the issue. could be that you pay more attention to the gauges now that the new alt is in. or could be that the thermostat and water pump are giving out and you are thinking thats the cause.. im running the 370a and notice no cooling difference. heck, there are guys here with 2 alts even some with 4 and they have no cooling issues
