The Alpine that almost was (FD-2 Restyle System with 9" Screen)

Recommended Posts

I just wanted to say thanks to my boys at Del Rey Customs aka Al and Ed's in Southern California. I really REALLY wanted this new Alpine FD-2 deck for my new Ford F150 Ecoboost. I already have a nice 8" screen stock, but the Alpine is always way tempting, especially if it will interface with my vehicle. The factory screen runs everything including the HVAC controls, seat temperature, Steering wheel controls, xm, and other vehicle specific controls. As you might know if you have a vehicle like this (My Lexus is the same way), you are limited to keeping the stock Navi/touch screen because it is so much part of the car. This Alpine was going to be the ANSWER! They tap in to the stock computer somehow and do everything the old one did but better!

So i really didn't want to drop $3500 bucks on a stereo (MSRP), on a website that isn't authorized. I wanted peace of mind from a real dealer just in case there is problems down the road. I called up the guys at Del Rey and told them i would drive to Southern California and pick up the deck in person if they would get me one. They made me a deal i couldn't refuse! This week we had plans to drive down there and make a 3 day trip out of it.

A few days later, i get a phone call, "it's in!". Of course i beg for pictures! They text me a few and immediately i am in love! Until i read something on the side of the box. It says "compatible with 4.2" factory screen only". Well mine is 8" so this might be a problem. Of course we find this out on Friday while Alpine is closed until Tuesday (today). They call down to find out if maybe it is just not compatible with my stock Sony system and since i am ripping that shit out, it don't matter anyhow. As long as everything else works like the climate controls, steering wheel etc, i will be ok. The dash is exactly the same. Well about an hour ago, i got the message from the top...and it's no dice. So below this post, is the pictures of the Alpine FD-2 that ALMOST was. And i thank my friends at Del Rey for going out of their way to take care of me.

Essentially, this is the one that it works with.

Steve did you try looking into Maestro, they make a dash kit for your truck and just about all of the OEM features through the screen can be retained. it says that it'll only work on the 4.3" screen but I'd still reach out to iDatalink about the kit to see if it will work. the only real downfall for you would be, you'd have to use a Kenwood double din, but that's really not too back since their new Apple Carplay/Android Auto units are being shipped this month and next mainly the DDX9702S

i believe that is the platform that the Alpine runs off of....and it doesn't work. If someone know's something different i am all ears. But so far NOT so good. lol

steve, i have the same issue with my MyFordTouch system. its such crap LOL. i just got a 360.3 installed (tied in after the stock amp, and RTA'd. its ok). ray west said to just tie the 360 in before the amp so you dont have to deal with the shit signal after the amp, and that there is a company coming out shortly with a SWC module for our systems. before this SWC module comes out though, you will have to rely on the 360.3 remote in order to change the volume, since the signal coming INTO the factory sony amp is unattenuated. there is a separate canbus wire that goes into the amp that controls the volume coming out.

go to the Alpine site and look up the different restyle systems. I think there is some Toyota stuff there but don't get excited, it only takes one little thing and the deal is off apparently haha :D

So the kit just dosent fit or just dosent work due to the screen being integrated too much with your 8 inch screen?

That's why they don't deliver.

Yer ass better go sit along the side of the road and wait.

You can't expect them to travel up some dirt road in a hick / back woods town. Thats how horror movies start :D

I explain things very simply and use analogies in terms of Pickles, and grape drink, pool noodles and jackhammers...if you can't put 2 and 2 together there man, There simply is not much more I can do.

the climate controls won't work for some reason. I wish i had a better answer. Physically i don't see why it wouldn't fit in the hole but HVAC is kinda important too :D
