How often should you change a serpinite belt?

Recommended Posts

I have such bad belt slip that the belt squeals when I start the engine, or after the rpm drop after a gear shift. My tensioner and belt is less than a year old. The belt is 3/4 shorter than the stock belt. It has only recently started doing this, I'd say about a month ago.

About two weeks ago I tried using belt dressing with no luck, it just made a sticky mess. I am tempted to put the stock pulley on to see if it makes a difference by slowing down he alternator. I don't need good idle output anyway.

Yeah, I am using a Prestone belt, just what the local auto parts store sells.

I use a gates....

and i change it about 3-5 times in a 4 months season........ nature of the beast ......

EDIT- as you found out.. never ever use belt dressing in automotive...... just makes a mess..... and does nothing.

I change mine every ~3000 miles. Usually pretty well done at that point.

you'll see as they wear through, you'll begin to see the grooves "bottom out" against the fabric of the belt along with a shiny appearance within the grooves. If you see that or cracking/fraying, probably time for a new one

FWIW I use a gates HD belt. Seems to be the most stretch resistant out of anything I've used. Others would stretch so bad my tensioner would be almost maxed out and I'd need to tighten it on a weekly basis
