Best strategy for solid wall shell (wood only)?

Recommended Posts

I'm planning to build up to the B pillar in a few weeks, so wondering what the best option is for solid (unflexing) walls.

Multiple layers of mdf/ply? How many layers?

2X4's skeleton + 1 sheet, 2 sheets mdf/ply? Which side of the 2X4 to the ply/MDF? How close to space the 2X4's? Space not so much of an issue, weight more so, then cost. Priority will be rigidity.

Anybody know any build logs off the top of their head with some good examples?

Quality 3/4" plywood (has at least 7 plys) is both lighter and stiffer than MDF.

You can gain a lot of strength with good bracing. You want to brace the middle of the panels, the corners are stiff enough already. If possible brace to an opposing panel, if you can't do that brace at an angle to an adjoining panel.

Look at audiofanticz build log, I don't think you'll find a better built all wood wall than his.

That being said a lot of people's definition of "music" is a clipped 30 hz sine wave with some 80 IQ knuckle head grunting about committing crimes and his genitals.

You think that's any stronger than this here? Certainly would be double the weight.

I'm wondering if anyone has tried something like this using only half the number of 2X4 skipping every other one? Saving weight and material cost would be very nice.

2x4's actually aren't very strong in that orientation.

If I were going to use 2x4's for a shell I'd want the 1.5" side against the enclosure not the 3.5" side.

I wouldn't see why you couldn't skip every other one but why would you since 2x4's are cheap?

Oh and yes I would think Brian's wall is stronger than the one you posted.

If you look at my construction pics, every joint where 1 piece of wood meets another is overlapped. They are tight joints, with gallons upon gallons upon gallons of woodglue to the point I was buying a few gallons at a time. I think I lost track after 9 or so gallons and 30+sheets of mdf.

The way I layered the back wall took a lot of time too.

Best idea I have seem stacking wood. I hate watching people stack weak ass 2x4s. This was is strong, and a good way to get rid of scrap wood in the process

Now maybe one day I will work on it again.....

after getting it playing last fall, then adding 10k to it, then adding 20k to it this spring I havent really touched it, but been busy with other projects.

I was also thinking about 1.5" side against the enclosure. Mainly looking at 2X4's (and thinking about skipping every other) for weight savings. I do question whether two sheets of ply/MDF is much less flexible than a 2X4. 5 sheet thick walls, apart from the baffle, is right out. I simply cannot justify the weight.

Not knocking your work there, but that cost and mass of materials is simply not an option for me. Also I noticed you made use of every inch of volume in your shell building around every angle and the wheel wells. I'm only looking for 20 cube + port so I'll be keeping the box as regular/simple shaped as possible. I'm not so much worried about corners/edges as simply sides that are rigid.

Thanks for all the feedback, guys.
