Computer techy question (modem related)

Recommended Posts

What's a good modem/router combo with wifi for home use?

I need something with the coax input (comcast internet). I did go to radioshack (this was years ago) and got a modem. Found out coax input and so I returned it. The manager tried to bitch me out saying that I was dumb and all and it would indeed work. Nah, only had the ethernet input.

Looking to finally own and not rent. (A one time cost is a lot cheaper than "forever" $10 a month)

Not needing the best, you know. But something that's good and reliable. If the range is "small" (Only a 2 bedroom 1 floor condo, doesn't have to have a gigantic range) and is bad, I can always just get a range extender.

Idk if devices really matter but it'd be 2 devices (ps4 and 1 computer) wired up. And 4 devices (tablet, 2 phones, laptop) wireless. Generally, it's all at once. Streaming music from laptop while playing ps4, sometimes looking at the computer, and both phones on wifi.

Arris/Motorola SB6121 or SB6141 for the modem.

Linksys or ASUS on the router side of things.

All-in-one devices are shitty.

Stay Away from the cheap routers! doesn't matter what brand... you'll have issues.

With Linksys... the EA6300 and up....

I am running the modem above and a 2 year old Asus RT-AC66R.

i still manange these speeds

Nah, you can opt out of a rental modem and get your own. Not many people do...

Best think I have ever done.... 0 issues since the swap...

I had to take my modem to one of thier service centers\retail locaions to turn it in.

Motorola is winning the game with cable modems.

I have to disagree with you on the all-in-one devices. As far as features and customization goes, all-in-ones are lacking. I have a centurylink modem/router combo and it blows the asus I had in the same price range out of the water. Maybe it's luck.

Also worth mentioning the customer support you get from all-in-ones or a modem and router being the same brand. If you suspect problems with either device, you'd be able to get support for both in just one phone call.
