Mechman Alternators

Need new alternator , but?

Recommended Posts

I am going to be needing a alternator , but I have a couple question that I anyone could help. I have a 2005 Jeep Liberty. I am contemplating getting this alternator. http://www.mechman.com/alternators/dodge/dakota/3-7l/2000-2006/s-series-240-amp-alternator-for-3-7-4-7-chrysler-late . I Notice that the Installation notes says

"This unit comes equipped with a smaller 1.75 inch diamter alternator pulley, and will require a slightly shorter drive belt for proper belt tension."

How do i know what size belt i will need? I had a stroke years ago and I'm not always the smartest brick in the load. Thanks for your time.

Start with the next smaller size and if that doesn't do the trick move down again.

Might take a few to get the right one.

That being said a lot of people's definition of "music" is a clipped 30 hz sine wave with some 80 IQ knuckle head grunting about committing crimes and his genitals.

you usually need a 1/2 - 3/4" shorter belt. Find your stock belt length, and go from there.

I went through this when I installed a smaller pulley on my 1998 4.0ohv explorer.... went to the autoparts store and kept grabbing the next shorter belt until I found the perfect one.... guy behind the counter did not mind at all..... was kind of a buy it return it deal that lasted about 30 minutes! once the belt tensioner sits in the middle quest is over! just remember to document what belt worked so you do not have to do this all over again!

I found my actual size of my factory belt by going to the auto parts store and then i selected a belt they had in stock that was about 1 inch shorter. This method can only be done by part numbers not make and model. Took about 15minutes of research but I got it right the first time.
