To upgrade or replace?

Recommended Posts

My main rig is an HP touch smart all in one 610-1015XT and the configuration is:

Running windows 7 home premium 64 bit

Processor Intel® Core i5 CPU 670 @ 3.47GHz, 3468 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)
Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 6.00 GB
Total Physical Memory 5.87 GB
Available Physical Memory 2.77 GB
Total Virtual Memory 11.7 GB
Available Virtual Memory 7.95 GB
Page File Space 5.87 GB
ATI Radeon HD 5570
So that list is what I actually have. The only upgrades I can find that I know are compatible is from the list of possible OEM configurations which is this:
Hardware Options
Hardware Component

  • 12 GB (3 x 4 GB) DDR3 PC3-10600 (messaged as PC3-8500)

  • 16 GB (4 x 4 GB) DDR3-1066 MHz

raphics
Must select one of the following options:
  • Integrated Intel HD graphics

  • AMD Radeon HD 6450A 1 GB)

  • nVidia GeForce G210

  • nVidia GeForce GT 425M (1 GB)

  • ATI MXM 3.0 (1 GB)

  • ATI MXM 3.0 (2 GB)

  • Radeon HD 6550A (2 GB)

  • nVidia GeForce GT 425M (2 GB)

I use this for running DJ software to DJ live events. I also use it to run light controlling software.
When I try to run both simultaneously after a bit the computer will drop communication with (one or both) hardware that is connected via usb to control both progams which is night marish during a live performance.
I have about $500 - $800 to spend. AM I better off upgrading or would the money be better spent buying a laptop?
Thanks fellas!

Most likely buying a new laptop.

I dont think those have parts in them that you can physically remove and replace besides the memory and hard drives usually.

Typically the video cards are built on to the motherboard so there is no way replacing that.

Sometimes you can change the processors but they are sometimes built on to the motherboard.

At least in laptops anyways.

Since this is an all-in-one type machine chances are its all integrated as one, or they are using propitiatory parts so you cant go to the local store/website and buy a video card off the shelf and slap it in.

More than likely HP will not sell you said parts outright either.

So any "upgrades" that you would have wanted should of been bought when you ordered/bought the machine.

This is how they get people buying new machines every few years.

Yeah, you can upgrade it. The CPU is not integrated. The cheapest upgrade path for that motherboard would be the i7 860... Something like this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Core-i7-860-2-80-Ghz-lga1155-Quad-Core-Processor-/191834784317?hash=item2caa3e823d:g:Zo4AAOSwJQdW9JKU

Here is a picture of your motherboard, the ZN7

http://support.hp.com/doc-images/118/c02705482.jpg

You can see the processor is removable.

They have a guide to help you replace a few things... The CPU is not one of them, but here is the guide:

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02787002

You can upgrade the memory up to 16GB of RAM. It only supports 4GB sticks and it has to be laptop RAM, so this is what you will want to go with:

You can upgrade the HDD to a SSD, but you will need to figure out how you wanted to load the operating system onto the new drive.

Looks like they have a MXM slot on the motherboard which is what fits laptop video cards. You are going to be extremely limited here... I would probably go with this:

Guess I was wrong, I know a lot of them are really locked down.

Either way if you upgrade it to the best you can get, its still a 6 year old video card and 7 year old processor.

$500-800 can sure buy a nice laptop that will run circles around what you have if your actually willing to spend the money.

Plus since its business related its a tax right off.

  • 3 weeks later...

Cheaper more powerful solution. Build a mitx computer from new parts.. As he said above, you can change alot on the one you currently own. All depends on how "in depth" you want to be with it. And how fast/powerful you want it to be also. Also the 2500k is 4 or 5 years old. Still decent imho but the newer intel procs walk all over them.
