So gonna be 21 here in a couple weeks. So I can officially get myself a handgun in the dump of a state. (illinois) I'll be saving up for it but think I want one soon. Not looking for a huge budget but would like decent quality. I'm a big guy big hands. So I'd like something that feels good. I like things to be heavy but balanced. But I'll leave that to you guys. Not sure if I'll do CC or not. Future maybe. Let's aim around $350-500. What's a good all purpose round? 9mm, .45, .38, 5.7mm? I don't know a great deal about guns so that's why I'm asking for your help. I know some of the decent brands would be Glock, s&w, and a few others but that's about it. What's a good entry level gun that is decently easy to modify or disassemble should I want to do some mods to it and for cleaning? Ask me anything if you need more info. Thanks guys.

It would also be a good idea to sign up for some training at your range. They should have a class where you will learn safe handling practices as well as break down and cleaning of your gun.

having big hands with a glock sucks unless you get the grip extender. that will help greatly. Downside to a glock is the lack of a traditional safety. I prefer 1911 style 45 caliber handguns, good stopping power but only have an 8 round mag unless you decided to customize the gun a bit. Hard to find a decent 1911 in that price range unless you buy used. A lot of places will get police buy backs at incredible prices. gotta look at your local gun stores and see who carries alot used weapons.

Go rent a few a try them out, only real way to tell what you like is to try them

X2,

You've got to shoot it to know if it will be what you want or not.

Are you going to get a cpl as well?

That being said a lot of people's definition of "music" is a clipped 30 hz sine wave with some 80 IQ knuckle head grunting about committing crimes and his genitals.

HK USP for the win. A bit of a stretch past your budget, but maybe look for one used. Truly great pistols, I own two. A Glock would fit your budget, but the USP has cool features and its higher capacity than a 1911. My brother has huge Kawhi Leonard sized hands and he loves his Glocks. Definitely test drive if you can before you buy. Good luck and enjoy. I remember when I turned 21, I went and bought a pistol as soon as I had the cash.

There are lots of good choices to choose from. Like others have said, the most important feature to look for is the ability to fit your hand well.

I'm a big fan of CZ handguns. You get a lot of quality for the price.

All new to me. What's cpl? I'll have to look at some of the local stores. We only have 1 maybe 2 ranges around here. Alot of outdoor but no store near them. I fully wanted to pump 50+ thru each that id like to try to get a feel for them. My main thoughts were Glock, USP, or 1911 style, just need help on brands. From what I'm hearing so far Glock may be out as far as size. From the few I have handled I do seem to be a fan of the polymer type guns. Feel seems good but I'd have to look at more to know.

What should I be looking for in a used gun just so I know?
