If I get an install done at a local shop should I expect them to build a box for me?

It's ridiculously easy for guys who build them all the time, and simply easy for everyone else. It also shouldn't cost too much, most of the cost would be on finishing. A rectangular box wrapped in just carpet is cheapest way. I would guess 150-200

http://www.hertzaudiovideo.com/car-audio-amplifier-hcp1d/ and http://phoenixgold.com/catalog/ti-series-subwoofers/ Sub will be a 12. No idea if it will be 2 or 4 ohm. This is what they had in their store. I'll ask about a custom box next time I go there. If it only costs me $100 to $150 more I'd be ok with that.

I'd ask to see some examples of their work before you have them build you a box. Better yet see if they have any builds in progress and ask to see what their boxes look like on the inside.

Building boxes isn't particularly difficult to do, but I've sure seen shops screw it up. There definitely a difference between your average shop made "custom" box and a really well designed and built box by someone who has the knowledge and experience to do it right and builds because its what they love to do.

Just make sure they don't charge you for a custom box, but give you a prefab like what strange said, or you could ask for a design on here and give it to them to build it....

pfft, i saw a shop take a 3 sub prefab, cut the back off, add a couple cubic feet and some tiny ports and called it a custom box.

Yea its crazy what shops will do . Iv seen them just take the carpet off a prefab and fiberglass everywhere and paint it

Just get one of these guys on here to build and ship you one. They just might work with that budget or a little more for 1 driver.

Supporting your local economy is an excellent idea. They should not be afraid to show you their shop with an install in progress. They should be proud to show their workmanship.
