Evilthx
My uncle let me borrow his old Radio Shack SPL meter. I really thought it would be higher than what it metered. 0db 40hz tone. Bass knob started at the 9 `oclock position (1/4 way up) and ended at 12 (half way up) Mind you, this is a 40hz tone, no music, with the meter held in my hand in the drivers seat, chest high and angled slightly forward and windows down. On music (Metallica song: Blackend) showed 121db max at the same volume. bsneon98
I have a Scosche SPL meter I use sometimes just to get an idea of different frequency responses.I really dont think the SPL reading is accurate at all. Just some arbitrary number that fluctuates with pressure differences Build Log: http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/152954-1998-plymouth-neon-updates/
Evilthx
The build is going to slow down for a bit... It may become... probably will become a build in a 1997 Mustang GT. A buddy of mine has just offered to sell me his for $800. 110,000 Miles, 4.6L with leather and a 5 speed. All it needs is a 5 speed tranny... such an easy fix. I can't in good conscience pass it up. Evilthx
From what my sister has told me, it's in great shape. It just has transmission issues. From the pics he has sent me, I see no dents either. That means when I do the stereo, only one of my JBL 12's will be transferred. Unless it gets a new build. It has a way smaller trunk than my jeep has cargo area. Evilthx
I set my amplifiers gains... I was WAY OFF doing it by ear. My head units volume goes to 35 so I set the gains with the volume at 30... just to be safe though I believe my head unit is distortion free at full volume. Alpine MRX-M100: 0db 50hz tone, all audio enhancements at 0 or flat. 49.1v at the speaker terminals. Setting for a 4ohm load. Should be 600w rms x 1. Alpine MRV-F545: 0db 1,000hz tone, all audio enhancements at 0 or flat. 20.2v at each of 4 channels speaker terminals. Settings for a 2ohm load. Should be 200w rms x 4. I decided to go 20v each channel on the mids and highs because I don't think the JBL GTO's can handle much more before they pop... that and because the gain setting on the MRV-F545 is push button instead of a dial and adjust gains in steps... it is weird but shes pumpin out some power. It didn't take long at all but damn... I am so lazy it took myself 30min to convince myself I wanted to do it lol. Evilthx
Looking for opinions... I'm running both of my 12's together for a 4ohm load... Slightly over 600w rms, 300 apiece. I have been mulling over just running 1 of the 12's so I can run it at 2ohm and push up to 1000w to it. I have run it both ways and it sounds good no matter what but I'm torn. The box with both subs has to be at or over 200lbs and I feel it when I drive. What do you all think? DeeBoy718
I read your post where you said you have them wired for a 4 ohm final load, but I'm curious as to why you haven't tried just running them one coil per for a 2 ohm load? They are being underpowered either way, but at least you'll be within their RMS rating. Are you concerned about mechanical failure due to the enclosure size and tuning? You can definitely go smaller on the box. I used baltic birch instead of MDF because of the weight difference, and like I said before, I have them in 1.8 cubes per chamber, and they absolutely slam. 1997 Ford ExplorerHead Unit: Pioneer AVH4400BH Double DinAvic-U260 Navigation Unit Doors:2x Rockford Fosgate PPS4-8- Front2x Rockford Fosgate PPS4-8- Rear4x McLaren MLT-2 tweeters Amps: Audiopipe APDL20001D- Bass Audiopipe APCL-6002 Mids Audiopipe APCL 1004- HighsSub Stage:2x JBL P1222 dual 2 ohm coilsElectrical:Mechman 270 Ho altXS Power D3400-Up Front 2x XS Power D1200- Rear http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/192815-finally-built-my-4th-order/
ShadeTreeMechanic
What would happen if you tried 1 ohm? Is that a 2 channel amp? $800 for a mustang that needs a tranny? That is a new sub amp lol. I put a tranny in a 93 ranger a while back.
