Implementing Bracing

Would you brace this little box for an 8" dc m3-8? I still have time to do it before the top goes on but just wanted to know if bracing is needed or if its only for bigger boxes with bigger heaver subs? Thanks man

Its 11.5 H 26 w 10.5 D sub up port up. Here is a pic of the inside. The box is 3/4" real Baltic birch and the bottom is 3/4 mdf. The bottom and back panels along with the back side of the port is all screwed and glued. The front is glued and 1/ 14" finish nails. The top is one piece of 3/4" Baltic then I will add a piece of 1/2" Baltic birch as an extra baffle but the cut out on the 1/2" will be to outside diam of the sub. And I will be adding a 1/2" 10x12" polycarbonate window on the top next to the sub rabbited into the 3/4 and the 1/2" over the top to seal the edges.

While bracing never hurts, you are probably fine without any bracing in that box. Due to the narrow panel widths your unbraced spans are all pretty low. Also baltic birch is a very stiff material.

Hey Triticum,

What about the idea of using half-round dowel rods spaced along a flat surface? I thought about doing that because of the extra strength added by the round shape. Or will it always be better to brace between two perpendicular surfaces like you're showing?

I don't think the half-round dowels are going to provide much bracing at all.  Similar to how just adding a strip of doubled up panel doesn't do much for bracing either.  To get the strength you need to have a brace that sticks out from the panel quite a ways.  This is why bracing between two panel, either perpendicular or parallel to each other, works well.

I appreciate the feedback! I made a quick (and rough draft) sketchup of the idea in case I didn't really get it across right. You sure this wouldn't do much to prevent flexing of the panel?

For what it's worth, I looked into this more and yeah, shelf brace is stronger than hemisphere brace of same width. The nerd explanation is that it has to do with the area-moment of inertia. Cutting a cylinder in half cuts the MOI in half, so I would imagine it would reduce the AMOI by more orders of magnitude. A 1"x1" half round brace of same length as 1"x1" rectangular brace will have less than half the stiffness (maybe more like a quarter...not sure the math on that one). Now when you extend the length of the dimension working against the force (sound waves), the 1"x1" rectangle increased to 1"x4" gained 76 times more stiffness. So yeah.

What's worse is you can't increase the radius of the half round without increasing it's width too. So it's just not feasible like the shelf brace.

A sound wave causes both outward and inward deflections though right? I wonder how that works for the inward case.
