Not Your Grandfather's Ohm Load...

Hey! I'm trying to wire my SoundQubed Q1-1200.2 down to 0.5 Ohm. I have aftermarket watercooling going on it, so I'm not too worried about temps.

The problem is that I only have one HDS-312 Dual Voice Coil @ 2 Ohm each (currently wired down to 1 Ohm final load). Does this mean if I double the amount of wire joining the two coils, I can approach 0.5 final Ohm load?

Please don't just tell me not to do it. If any of us listened to that logic we wouldn't have the crazy setups that we do on here.

Nope, you're stuck with 1 or 4 ohms with that coil configuration.

Don't think adding wire would help, it would take away power from the VC's and just generate heat AFAIK.

water cooling?

We're all friends here, you ain't gotta lie to kick it.

lol

that actually reminded me of an article in one of the old car audio mags back in the day. Some guy used a bunch of dental tubing and ran water cooled amps. Man i wished I still had those nags.

New build coming........

Based on the question you just asked I'd suggest sticking to the ohm load the amp is rated for.

Wiring below rated is best left to experienced users.

And no adding extra wires will not lower your ohm load,

Why you'd even think it would is beyond on me.

That being said a lot of people's definition of "music" is a clipped 30 hz sine wave with some 80 IQ knuckle head grunting about committing crimes and his genitals.

how would adding wire take power away? please explain.

Poorly worded on my part, meant it would not allow all the power to be used by the coils instead would generate heat.

I'm just a dumb pipefitter who's not so good with all the word speak sometimes.

I'm guessing the watercooling is done via chillblocks or something

Haha I'm actually putting some PC water cooling equipment on it and running at 0.5 ohm when my HDC418s come in for the wall, just until I get the Q1-7000.

My logic was that more wire or heavier gauge = less resistance.

I wouldn't think that more wire would take away power from the voice coils. Having 2/0 wire creates less resistance than 1/0, so I wouldn't see why it would be any different.
