89 accord engine swap. Failures inside!

Recommended Posts

So i was asked to post this.

Anyway, If anyone remembers i had an 87 accord walled off, 210k miles on the engine. I parked it because it needed 5th gear, various front end bushings and better rear springs. Then i found an 89 accord with 140k miles but the previous owner ran it out of water and then filled it while it was hot and probably cracked the block let alone the blown head gasket. I figured it would be cheaper just to swap motors because i didnt know for sure what would need fixed.

So this is the pictorial of that saga.

Keep in mind i dont mechanic by trade, i just work on my own stuff when i can.

On with the show, failures included.

Of course there were strange differences, like this throttle linkage

and the whole damn intake turned out to be different as well.

This is were i was disconnecting the clutch cable

the exhaust manifold was different on the 89 as well, it has two pipes and the 87 had one. So two o2 sensors instead of one.

the wire harness was completely different. Random plugs had changed, and the whole harness main plugs were different.

so anyway, here is the good engine coming out transmission and all since its a bitch to separate them in the engine compartment

and now that its out, they are seperated

here is the other engine coming out. damn shame, it was so clean too.

since it was an automatic, it came out easier and without the transmission attached,

so some random other things i ran into, like my aluminum radiator has JIC conectors for coolerlines for the transmission and the stock had some other thing so i had to put the older one in for now.

I had to swap intakes with the engine installed because i couldnt resolve the vacuum lines and electronics even by swapping out the plugs with the mismatched ones.

Anyway, after swapping intakes and getting everything hooked up its running like a top.

This is to be my wifes car, and i really want to take it because it drives so damn nice. Anyway, she spent every evening after she got home hanging out in the garage helping where she could and that was awesome. She loves the car and im glad im done with it for now.

I love it when my wife hangs out with me, that's a good feeling. Love those old Hondas. My wife had a 89 accord. Sedan with a sun roof 5 speed. It was a blast to drive. I had just done a timing belt and water pump. paid a fortune for a new radiator. new battery. 300k miles and she let her brother drive it. Wrecked it and the insurance company said it was worth $750. We miss that car.
