`97 Mustang GT (Finally)

Recommended Posts

Ok, so let me start with this. I have wanted a Mustang GT for a while. My buddy Brian, a guy I grew up with, owned in the neighborhood of 17 Mustangs. He owned a 1968 Acapulco Blue, J code... several fox bodies, a few SN95's including a `98 Cobra and some others. I helped him with almost all of his Mustangs from engine work to stereo installs and we had so much fun. Sadly, he passed away back in 2012 from a cancerous brain tumor. Brian was my best friend and sidekick through good and bad for many years. This Mustang is going to be my little tribute to him.

Now, onto the good stuff!!! A family friend of mine offered me a deal I couldn't pass up. A 1997 Mustang GT 5-speed Coupe for $800. What's wrong with it you ask? A minor issue with not going into reverse all the time... that's it. She has 110,000 miles, new paint (black w/blue flakes), cowl hood, Cobra front bumper, 4.6L 2V V8, T-45 5-speed and ugly tail lights and grill emblem. I will have it home in a little over a week from now.

After I correct a few exterior appearance issues (tail lights and flaming pony grill emblem) I will be focused on the stereo. My beginning plans are as follows:

Head Unit - Pioneer 80PRS - set as low, mid, high outputs instead of sub, rear, front.

No rear dash speakers

Single 10" sub ported through the rear deck (Rockford Fosgate)

Front Speakers - RF T2652-S components (possibly/additionally a pair of Pro PPS4-6 for added midbass punch)

No passive crossovers

Amps - All RF Punch - 4ch for the T2652-S's, a 2ch for the Pro PPS4-6's (if used), a mono amp for the 10"

All Power/Ground and signal cables will be Black- and Blue+

I have 100ft of 12awg ofc black and blue speaker wire that will be used exclusively for the mids and highs. Yes, I know it's excessive to use 12awg for mids and highs but screw it, why not? 8 - 10awg will be used for the sub. I have settled on RCA's from Sky High Car Audio because they are black w/blue accents and are of good quality. When the speaker wires are laid, they will be encased in copper foil tape on the long runs along the floor of the Mustang. This tape made my guitars dead silent. I haven't been able to find a whole lot of info on installs in the SN95 Mustangs so hopefully I will be able to help others along the way. Here are a couple of pics of the Mustang.

The guy I'm getting it from has a 2002 gt that threw a rod. I'm going to be grabbing the heads and intake from it free of charge and any other parts I want. He really is a cool guy. The '97 will be getting eibach pro springs so it will sit nice. No LS swap for this pony car... Maybe if I still had one of my 280zx's I'd swap into those, but not the Mustang.

Brian and I discovered the 5th to reverse a long time ago. I'm just hoping that's all it is... Most likely the double fork for 5th/rev isn't damaged from being over forced to much. Even if it is, I have access to a built T-45 so no worries.

This car will be N/A all the way. I'm shooting for 300 wheel hp which isn't hard for the 4.6l. PI heads and intake, I have the BBK TB/Plenum single unit. It will get mild Comp Cams camshafts. Lightweight flywheel, BBK CAI, X-pipe. , a tune... A bunch of other stuff but it's going to be a daily driver.
