JeepAndBassXJ
Decided to start a thread about my quest for dbzzzz in my daily driver. I told myself I would not be doing anything big with this car but I am learning not to trust myself with that kind of promise lol! Here is the car's actual build log: http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/205951-sotm-build-2000-honda-civic-ex-140db-daily-build/?p=3124379 So I had a little setup in the car that only did 140.8db at about 34hz dB Drag style. Grabbed some equipment from my Jeep (currently being rebuilt) and got some subs to play with from Jeff Vue of JVF Customz. So here is what I'm working with as of December 2016: Car - 2000 Honda Civic Ex 5 Speed w/ sunroof, ac, bla bla bla. Electrical - Stock 70a Alternator, $60 G51R stock under hood battery, Big 3 done with SHCA 4 gauge cca, 4 gauge Xs cca to the rear, G34 battery in the rear. So basically shit for electrical but its kool...but I did get some supercaps! BIGGG help with those. Subs - 2 JVF Customz 3.3 12's, 3" 8 layer coil D1.4, 10" spider???, fat motor (same as my 18's in the Jeep) on 12 spoke. Box - 3.4 cube, subs forward, port forward, 8" aero. Power - 1 DC Audio 3.5k DAT AZZ!! 3.5k with caps in spare tire location. Caps did not get used until later. Decided this was a bad location for the amp so it's going to move asap. Makeshift setup. Box hardly fits and I don't like the subs up at the deck lid. This box is named the "bitch box" mostly because its been in about every "loud" street stock car in NorCal since like 2011. I won West Coast championships with it in 2015. So now lets get on with testing! I'll just post as I go with it! JeepAndBassXJ
So the first few test sessions were interesting. I started out with a somewhat short port and found peak to be at 53hz only doing this score.... My gut told me to tune lower because the daily setup had peaked so low. Only 2hz above tuning. So I added to the port and BAM! Huge jump after some box movement and now peaking at 49hz! This is where it gets odd...so the old meter vs the new magnum meter I normally gain about .3db and keep the same freq. But something must have happened overnight or I was wrong about peaking at 49hz because it wanted 53hz again! Its liked 53hz ever since so I can't really explain what happened there. The other issue was I was clamping wayyyyy more power than I wanted to be so something had to be changed...lots of things really. JeepAndBassXJ
So I went and grabbed me 2 banks of the 2.7v maxwell super caps. WITHOUT changing anything but the caps I gained a full 2db!! The starting voltage was the same before and after adding them at 14.5v. So the 3.5k at same voltage but with the addition of the caps made a huge jump in power. Almost 1k w. Then came the part where I try to widdle down on the power. A combination of sealing off the leaky box, going from pause burp to roll on burp, moving it to left side of the trunk, playing with the deck's sub level and seat positions I worked it down to 3.7k and a decent 150.5db. I also used some tricks I learned from when I was shooting for Street Stock 2k with the Jeep and deadened the port and used foil tape in various locations and got the power even lower. JeepAndBassXJ
So with me first goal reached, 150db by the Toys For Tots Db drag show, I now had a chance to see what it could do on lower power. Here are the basic results. 493W - 143.7db 955W - 146.6db 1920W - 149.3db 3544W - 150.8db Not bad considering its a trunk and my first attempt. So knowing this I expected the car to do a consistent 150.6 once I got to the show. But once again I surprise myself... Had a bunch of people sit on the trunk and part of the roof and it just went nuttttttzzzzz!!!! Gained a full DB!!! Power went up about 300W but I'm sure that's from the weather and some change in box rise with the car being held. Later backed it up with only a 51.1 but now I know that it needs people holding it...guess if I can get loud during testing I should always end up better once I have help in the lanes. Kinda like getting free dbs! So with that result I'm excited to see what it can do with more work! Next step...custom (actually made for the car) box! Stay tuned! Keith77
Pretty cool.... Way cool was the gain with the 2nd bank of caps Thats cool. Im way too old to be upset by shit like that. Your name is winston. Your own parents hated you even before you were born. My penis is bigger than your penis I'm far from loud and my roof/headliner flaps around like Adam's ass on a windy day. I think it depends more on the structure of the vehicle.
