your filter settings depend on your driver capabilities as well as personal preference. Yes, you can use your deck's filter settings as well as your amp. it's redundant, but it won't hurt anything.

Usually people will set the subsonic filter about a half octave below port tuning to prevent unloading.

head units generally don't have a subsonic built in.  i always set the amps crossover points a little below (on hpf) and high (on lpf) so if the head unit ever loses power or gets reset it's a fail safe.

He didn't mention using a subsonic on the deck. He said LPF. a subsonic would be a HPF.
