Zach's Ford Excursion Side Mounted, 20 Layer Spare Tire Speaker Enclosure - 2 SMD Mini 12" Subwoofers - Ported @32hz

My buddy, and Fastenal guy Zach has been itching to put a system in his Excursion for a while.  As he started to come around the shop to drop off nuts/bolts and other hardware for all the SMD stuff we build, he started to itch more.  Who wouldn't after seeing what they see at my shop   It can make someone that doesn't know anything about car audio want some beat

 

Anyhow, like most people our age, he wants great bass but not take up too much space in the back.  So he decided to build a side mounted spare tire box.  Now before you say "well what about the spare"...know this.  He has a decent sized lift kit (i don't know the exact amount) and some large off road tires.  His off road spare doesn't fit in the stock spot and the stock spare does him no good. So this side mount is perfect!

This thing was done in 20 layers.  It was NOT done on a CNC.  It was done with by hand, with a jig saw. I believe he used a router and circle jig for the speaker and port cut-outs. The actual rings that make up the body of the box were cut in half-circles to utilize material much better and not have so much waste.  The rings are made of 1/2" Particle board and then soaked in SMD sunflash to seal the porous wood. The top, bottom and countersunk baffle are 3/4" MDF.  There will be all-thread running through the box for a brace and it will also serve as a mount for the box.

the box slams! but the baffle flexes a little too much.  The all-thread doesn't go in until it is mounted in the vehicle. That should slow it down if not stop the vibration. He might even need more after the test i just did. Had Brandon scooting around the shop just from woofer power

 

ill be working on the video today. I will also update this post when he gets the box mounted and the amps in the vehicle. Stay tuned!

Now that's thinking outside the box! There is more than one way to put subs in the back and this is a perfect way to utilize that space. Great work!

Really neat idea replacing the spare tire area like that with the circle box...and amazing work doing it by hand jigsawing!  I really like the Second Skin Spectrum on there...I've never got to see it close up but it seems to have a good texture to it.
