koolcat90
A week ago I upgraded my old Kinetik battery to an XS Power AGM D925 in hopes to help my headlight dimming. It helps but not completely and the dimming comes back hard after about 10 minutes playtime. Voltage drops from 14.1 to 12/13 volts within 15 minutes max if playing it constantly. I'm running one Sundown SA12 by an oldschool KOLE Audio HK620-2 amplifier in bridge mode 620 Watts I think. Low power for this sub I know but it sounds fantastic and flexes everything. Cannot find much info on my KOLE amp and I know its not class D. If I got a newer "Class D" amp would it lessen my headlight dimming? Also, did the big 3 upgrade with 1/0 gauge wire, and 2 gauge wire going from under hood to trunk XS battery and amp. Have a brand new Bosch battery under the hood as well, and XS battery is connected using a stinger relay/isolator so they're not connected when car is off. Stock 110Amp alternator. Upgrading alternator not an option. Every single thing in my car is grounded properly. After fully charging XS D925 battery externally and installing it still dims after 5-10 minutes and sometimes immediately depending on the song I'm playing. I'm starting to think my KOLE amp is causing these dimming issues somehow. What do you think?
ShadeTreeMechanic
You will still have this problem with a class D. The problem is that when the voltage starts to dip, its because the front and rear battery are running out of power. They are running out of power because the alternator can't keep up. When the voltage goes below 14v, the alternator has to charge both batteries and run the amp at the same time. The alternator is fighting a losing battle and the only thing you can do is turn it down. Or get a bigger alternator. Edit: I would also replace the 2 ga wire with 1/0. 91 C350 Centurion conversion ( Four Door One Ton Bronco) 250A Alternator (Second Alternator Coming Soon) G65 AGM Up Front / Two G31 AGM in Back Pioneer 80PRS CT Sounds AT125.2 / CT Sounds 6.5 Strato Pro component Front Stage CT Sounds AT125.2 / Lanzar Pro 8" coax w/compression horn tweeter Rear Fill FSD 5000D 1/2 ohm (SoundQubed 7k Coming Soon) Two HDS315 Four Qubes Each 34hz (Two HDC3.118 and New Box Coming Soon)
MrSkippyJ
Or replace your headlights with HIDs. Normal headlights are crazy sensitive to any voltage change. It won't hurt anything but you will see it. You can also get rid of the isolator, it's not needed. Kyblack76
A- who cares if your lights dim? B- get more bank/battery, get an actual working, super cap set up, get a alternator that is larger (even then, the turn on maybe so slow youll get dimming with a 500 amp alt) C- install HID lamps and dont worry about it, unless your dropping to the point of scary. It's damn near impossible to keep normal halogen headlights from dimming. It's not a sign of weak electrical so if he doesn't want them dimming, he needs to change to lights that aren't so sensitive to voltage fluctuations. I would honestly be far more worried about halogen lights that don't dim than ones that do. Also, someone being able to run 2,000 watts RMS on a factory alternator (like you claim) without any headlight dimming is going to depend on the size of the stock alternator. A newer car with a 180a stock alt will do much better than an older honda civic with a 60a alternator for sure. No way on earth anyone with a honda civic can run 2,000 watts on a stock alternator without any dimming (with halogen bulbs). I have no idea what kind of car you have or what type of headlights you have but that is rare. meade916
i just want to also point out that a D925 is a very small battery. I wouldn't expect it would make much difference at all.
