Mitchaford
So I used to fish when I lived by the beach. Pier fishing specifically. I used my grandfathers setup, no idea what it was. Now that I'm settled and live in a new state I want get back into it. Most of whats around me is rockfish and bluegill. I have no idea what type of setup I need (rod/reel) but I just want to get back to it. Not looking to spend too much, only will be able to do it two/three times a month so a nice affordable setup would be great. If anyone can link me anything that would help that would be great. There is a Cabelas not too far from me so I can get stuff from there or order online. 2008 VW Jetta Team Fi 12 CT 4000.1 CT 125.4 PWX 6.5 80 PRS EB Flex 2/0 Second Skin ^^^ Build ^^^
Wishuponasub
If your rockfish are the same as I'm thinking(a little larger than the bluegill but not quite bass size) then a nice crappie setup might work for you. Heck a zebco and uglystick would do you quite fine for this also. I go up to the Chesapeake Bay in MD and they are a bit bigger up there. Want something that I can handle here and there. 2008 VW Jetta Team Fi 12 CT 4000.1 CT 125.4 PWX 6.5 80 PRS EB Flex 2/0 Second Skin ^^^ Build ^^^
Wishuponasub
Tomorrow I will try to provide links and such but it's bedtime for me haha. I recommend checking out the H2O Express Mettle reel from Academy. Hopefully you have an Academy somewhere close by. Nice versatile reel and lifetime no hassle warranty. Its only like $60 and a lot of people use them around here including myself. I also use their camo rods as well. I will check this thread in the morning to see where we stand. Mitchaford
This one? http://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/h2o-xpress™-mettle-mt2-baitcast-reel-right-handed#repChildCatid=903506 Looks nice and over 100 reviews almost 5 stars? I think Ill pick that one. For a rod I was looking at these http://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/abu-garcia-vendetta-freshwater-casting-rod#repChildCatid=738327 http://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/shakespeare-ugly-stik-gx2-66-mh-casting-rod#repChildCatid=940608 http://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/shakespeare-ugly-stik-gx2-7-mh-casting-rod#repChildCatid=929610 I also saw some of those Abu Garcias that were looking nice for the price. 2008 VW Jetta Team Fi 12 CT 4000.1 CT 125.4 PWX 6.5 80 PRS EB Flex 2/0 Second Skin ^^^ Build ^^^
Wishuponasub
Yeah that's the reel. I haven't tried the MT2 which is the newer version I guess but from what I see it's the same just a little smaller. I'm thinking you may not like the ugly stick. That Abu Garcia would probably be a nice rod. I hadn't tried them out or really looked at them so I can't honestly give an opinion. But here are the rods I use: http://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/h2o-xpress™-realtree-max-5-baitcast-rod#repChildCatid=3898189 If you have any questions, just let me know. Fishing is one of my passions. Wishuponasub
Also for bigger fish of that size(up to 25 inches) I would go with the medium heavy rod. I don't know what kind of water or structure you will be fishing but if it's not clear water I would check out braided line. Save yourself time and frustration and get Power Pro braid. I use 30 lb braid for this setup. Its a little overkill but I fish a lot of structure and grass mats and whatnot, so it gives me the strength to be able to pull on it and also doesn't cut or nick like monofilament. Mitchaford
So im going to get that reel and the abu garcia medium heavy. With those, line, and a crankbaits it comes to about $160 I thought it was going to be much more than that. 2008 VW Jetta Team Fi 12 CT 4000.1 CT 125.4 PWX 6.5 80 PRS EB Flex 2/0 Second Skin ^^^ Build ^^^
