Krisztián Arnold
Hi Guys! I'm new here, but I've been doing car audio stuff for years so I know the basics. However there is one thing that I can not get the correct answer to, and that is how to measure an amplifier's RMS! I read through may pages of forums, but every single one of them just got me more confused. Since I don't have a fancy equipment to do it all I've been wondering if you guys can help me out. What kind of equipment and methods do I need to determine it properly? Also I've been told that the good old Ohm's, and Watt's law are not working correctly in this scenerio, witch I doubt but who knows, I might be wrong. And filally here is the video, that got me mixed up to the poin where I can't understand anything: I'm kinda stuck on this one, and it makes me go crazy. PLS HELP! THX in advance! Is there an oldschool way of doing this measurements? I mean back in the days when all of these fancy equipment was not available, how did you measure RMS? ChevyBoy95
Here are a few ways that actually give you real rms, not a VA number that is incorrect (the old way). 1. Use a DMM set to ACV and a AC clamp on ACA, with the amplifier wired to a resistor (since this is a DC circuit, P = volts * amps applies to give rms) 2. Use a dual channel oscilliscope (you will be able to measure phase angle here and calculate rms) 3. Use the term lab magnum probe and clamp (auto factors in the phase angle), the SMD amm1, or the HHAMD-1. (all of these are tools your can buy, with the SMD being the most refined and user friendly) Best Score to Date : 160.5 dB Outlaw (47Hz)[4 XM 15's & 2 Taramps Bass 12k's] BL : http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/147800-chevyboy95s-4-15s-7krms-wall-1533-db-on-half-power/YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/hitemwiththeflex/
Broke_Audio_Addict
Use a ruler, or a yard stick for high output amps. That being said a lot of people's definition of "music" is a clipped 30 hz sine wave with some 80 IQ knuckle head grunting about committing crimes and his genitals.
