do people still run cca wires ? lol jw

Recommended Posts

People still use it. Mostly because they don't understand what it is and it costs a lot less. There is a big thread here somewhere about it. Maybe it doesn't make any difference as long as the Kickers are still bumping?

There is nothing wrong with quality CCA wire, as long as it used properly, you just have to know what you need and use the right tool for the job.  CCA wire has more resistance than copper wire of equal size, so if you need the carry to same current you will need to use bigger wire with CCA.  In certain situations you can save money with CCA wire and not lose performance.  For example if the amperage requirements of your install require a wire bigger than 4 gauge OFC, but 1/0 OFC is overkill, you could use 1/0 CCA and save some bucks.

Choosing the right wire is all about managing the amount of voltage drop you get.  You can get the same voltage drop with CCA wire as you get with OFC, it just has to be sized differently.  Here is a good voltage drop calculator if you want to see for yourself: https://www.rapidtables.com/calc/wire/voltage-drop-calculator.html

There is a 100% valid reason. But, I don't think you actually care what it is.
