Cold weather and high charging voltage, any cause for concern?

Recommended Posts

So here's some pictures from the coffee run i just got home from,

This my voltage at rest, been sitting for 10-12 hours

Ambient temperature in my underground parking, assuming the alternator is the same temperature before starting.

Voltage just after starting the truck,

You know it's cold when a 20 minute drive in 2nd gear (automatic, reving about 2250) and you don't even crack 60f according to the thermocouple that came with my fluke meter. I've got the tip of the probe just inside one of the bolt holes holding the alternator case together

Voltage just before i shut the truck off,

Steve Meade is also getting 15.2 V at startup now in his Lexus IS-F according to the new video he posted, thanks to Mike Singer.

He's not chilling at -30c (-20F) like i am outside though, LOL!

Taking all that data is your best move man.  Well done.  Now if something goes fucky, you have a baseline with which to compare information.

On startup my voltage hangs around 15.0-15.3

It will stay in the 15s for about 10 minutes and then It'll stay in the 14s.

With this cold weather, it is fine if you're charging that high. Heat is really the issue when getting into that voltage on a 12v bank.
