** CCA or OFC **

Recommended Posts

I know there's a bunch of forums out there about this topic but still would like to hear all the feedback and maybe some new info. I'm currently getting ready to rewire my whole system an also the big 3 and such under the hood. I've already bought knukoncepz kca cca 1/0 awg  wire and also 8 awg for subs. I stumbled on some reviews on Johnathan prices (certified basshead) wire an some commented on when they changed to ofc from cca they gained almost 1.5 volts an more power output. So it has me thinking now.  What's your thoughts and opinions!?

The goal with getting the right wire is to deliver power to your amps with an acceptable amount of voltage drop.  There is always going to be some voltage drop, how much is acceptable to you is your decision, I shoot for .3 volts or less.  This can be accomplished with both OFC and CCA wire, it just has to be sized correctly.

1. Determine how much amperage the wire needs to carry.  Its going to depend on your amp, but your total watts divided by 10 is a decent place to start

2. Determine how long your wire runs are going to be, take your positive wire length, add your ground wire length, and divide that total by two.

3. Plug the above numbers into the voltage drop calculator here: https://www.rapidtables.com/calc/wire/voltage-drop-calculator.html

From there you can figure out how big of wire you need if its copper or aluminum.  No matter what you decide to go with BUY QUALITY WIRE THAT ACTUALLY IS THE SIZE IT CLAIMS TO BE!!!

welding wire, dont buy knuconcepts OFC, youre paying for the name, welding wire is virtually the same thing, at a reasonable price, they use standard AWG though so you need to order 2/0 or even 3/0 to get what youre used to seeing as car audio 1/0

Welding wire may have a tougher jacket, but the welding wire I've seen doesnt have tinning, which may be important in an engine bay.  Knu is one of the lowest cost audio cable out there for legit sized tinned OFC.

'Car audio' 1/0 isnt THAT much oversized.  Knu is oversized but still fits standard AWG lugs.  4/0 fits 4/0, 1/0 fits 1/0, 4AWG fits 4AWG.

In my current sub system,as well as in my last system, I have used the Royal Excelene copper welding cable available at my local welding supply store. I have had great results and in my opinion it’s plenty flexible enough for me. It’s affordable, a bit cheaper than specific car audio cable, but in shorter total lengths, it wouldn’t be THAT much more to purchase some of the quality brands of tinned ofc car audio cable. Matter of fact I intend on buying car audio type ofc 1/0 for my new skar amp, don’t know which one yet though.

I also recommend knukonceptz. Ive used both their cca and tinned ofc and have had wiring in vehicles for years used almost every day and have never had an issue. Ive found their speaker wiring is good qaulity as well as their rca's.
