Terminal bolt material

Recommended Posts

I will be using bolts for terminals on my wall. I have always used stainless steel bolts and nuts, but I am wondering if using an aluminum bolt, or even copper would make any difference in conductivity. I’ll be putting about 3k clamped of power through each bolt, so I just wanna make sure That I’m not limiting anything by using stainless, or if it’s worth the extra money to go aluminum.

Anyone have any input? Spend more for aluminum bolts, or just stick with stainless steel?

Stainless steel isn’t a great conductor. I use aluminum bolts just to error on the side of better conductivity. With that being said, I doubt it makes much difference in real world performance. You could probably measure the resistance through your stainless bolts and then we could figure out if you are losing anything.

I figured the difference would be negligible. Just wanted to make sure I wasn’t loosing out on some power because of it.

I run 3/8" aluminum bolts on my enclosure, but I measured resistance with stainless and it didnt make a difference.  I also add copper washers everywhere I can fit them but that might just be overkill on my part.

Yea, it comes down to running it though a thick bold at a VERY short distance, so loss is probably negligible.

Id use aluminum bolts simply because of the risk of galavanic corrosion occuring between the steel and aluminum.

That being said a lot of people's definition of "music" is a clipped 30 hz sine wave with some 80 IQ knuckle head grunting about committing crimes and his genitals.

I was asking our plant electricians awhile back for some copper bolts. After I explained what for they just said grab the stainless ones. They said it wouldn't make a difference. Now whether they were to lazy to get me the copper ones Or not is a different story.....

I looked everywhere for 3/8” or 10mm copper threaded rod. No dice. Considered getting round bar and threading it, but aluminum is so cheap and easy to get it just doesnt make sense to bother threading a bunch of round bar

it won't make one bit of difference...

Copper is only 2nd best...so if you are gonna play the copper game, you might as well be a baller and go with silver terminals.  :D

Stainless works fine ESPECIALLY at such a short distance like using a bolt for a terminal.
