3D Printing a "better" port

Recommended Posts

I recently got a 3D printer and have been playing around with it.  One thing I've wanted to do is try out some different port shapes that are very difficult to make any other way.  This is my first try, here it is in Fusion360:

And here are the printed parts:

I came up with this shape after reading a research paper about how having a port where the entire length is a gradual flare is supposed to provide the best performance (least amount of port noise and port compression).  This shape of port would be very difficult to make by hand.  My test port is equivalent to 3" in diameter and 7.5" long.  I plan on testing how this port performs compared to a regular 3" aero port with just ends flared.

very cool. Recently got one myself. I have a lot to learn as far as cad design goes. What kind of printer did you get?

I got a Tevo Tarantula.  I'm pretty happy with it, its not perfect and it took some time to get it figured out and dialed in, but it works pretty well now.

In for the research.  Where there's Triticum, there's data plots.

I love mine. If you decide you like printing enough to invest in some better software than free software get Simplify3D.

Also is that PLA or ABS?

Right now I’m using Cura and it seems to be working OK. I haven’t used anything else to compare it to yet though.

I printed the port in PLA. I have some ABS but I haven’t tried it yet. I want to get some PETG and see how it works too.
