A possibly stupid idea for midbass... Tell me what you think

Recommended Posts

So would this sound terrible?

My current idea is to upgrade my coaxial front stage into a component set and power it off either a 2 channel or 4 channel amp.

But if I were to buy a 4 channel could I use 2 channels for the components and bridge the last one for a midbass driver (8 inch) that would go where the factory one goes on the parcel tray just above my dedicated 2x 12 subwoofer box in the trunk.

Here is a picture of the factory sub placement I'm talking about. [08 Civic Coupe]

Let me know your thoughts on this, and if it would be a waste or sound terrible

Cheers

The 12’s would most likely drown out the 8” driver.  I would just get a 2 channel and power the front components.

I agree, the subs will mostly drown the 8. Although if you seal it off below if it isnt already, you can get some extra high bass/mid notes out of it (85hz-500hz). Which can help a little, espically if your subs are tuned low. but make sure if you do put an 8 there, that it is powered properly and that you seal off below it,create almost a box beneath it. which can sometimes be hard, if youre good with fiberglass it should be easy, if not, you might be able to find something online or somehow build your own enclosure.

@Joshdashef, make sure you set your 8s to a frequency range higher than your subs and YES you will have midbass.  Your subs shouldn't play above 80ish Hz anyway, so they wont be drowning out any of your *properly crossed over* midbass.

My personal preference on this, (it's all preference after all) is I would leave anything above about 100 hz in the front and let a nice set of components handle it.  I don't like anything above about 100 hz coming from behind.  Sounds like listening to concert backwards.  My e46 is terrible about this, but I'm going to work on it some.   In addition the midbass in the rear could cause phasing issues with your front stage.   Also, as have others mentioned,  you would need to have the midbass sealed off from your subs, which is A.  a PITA, and B.  sealing your subs off  even further from the rest of your car.

I like how people worry about the trouble of creating something cool when a little bit of time and effort can yield a product youre happy with for years to come.

I applaud the OP to do what he wants to do whether it be an ambitious project or something simple.

Having the 8” sealed off would benefit him also if he were to ever remove the 12’s.  He could then cross them lower at that point.

Thinking more about this, I do think the 8 would help. But, like I said, and a few others, it would need to be sealed. Having it crossed over to handle only midbass would be nice (70-300ish hz). It would also help to make sure you do have a solid front stage though.

Not trying to pimp the Rockville, but since you have a 6x9 hole in there this may be a good use of the space.

OP would still need to seal them off. So if doing the 8" is a issue than 2 6x9's might be to much. That factory set up has potential with some work.
