Breaking in an 18" subwoofer questions

Recommended Posts

I'm with broke. Break in ? .. nah.

Does a driver "loosen up" over time. Sure.  Break in, is for makers that dont trust their own driver.

Break in at this freq for this time. Gay as aids. Any real driver builder will tell you. Again, loosening them up, .. sure. But that happens, with banging on it. Period.

My first 8-10 hours of playtime on the SP4s, I couldnt give em more than a quarter turn of the knob before they got stanky.  Suspension was stupid tight when they were new.

Break-in, to me, just means to loosen them up to the point that you can give them full power without stank.

About 3 weeks or so of playing, cranking the knob a lil more each day, maybe after about 30 hours... and THEN they can take full tilt power.  To me, thats what break in is.

Break in refers to a process, not a step. Your sub will loosen during use, it's not a separate step  you need to undergo prior to installing it.

The only time you'd really need to go to any length to break in a sub is if you have multiples in a given enclosure with shared airspace and are reconing/replacing one of them. Aside from that, toss the fuckers in and let 'em go

Or, if you wanted to listen to them full tilt sooner than a few weeks, you could just play a test tone over night at the right gain and they would be able to take more power sooner.  Like, for instance, if you had a show this weekend and you just installed fresh subs.

OP wants to play his shit at power in a shorter time scale.

They will take full power right out the box, for real there is no need for break in.

That being said a lot of people's definition of "music" is a clipped 30 hz sine wave with some 80 IQ knuckle head grunting about committing crimes and his genitals.

Interesting. I only popped the question because Soundqubed talks about their subwoofers.needing to be broke in first. Because the xmax when their fresh as opposed to broke in is a big difference.

Heres a another quick question I'm curious about

My front baffle is 1.5" thick of Baltic birch. Everyone talks about panhead screws being the best. Does it matter? Just a wood screw is fine no?

I was thinking using wood screws that are 1.25" long so they don't Peirce the front baffle so if I ever have to take the driver out theirs no holes. And I can just rotate the driver for fresh wood to bite in. Thoughts?

I personally use sheet metal screws. Theyre stronger than wood screws but the thread pitch is finer so you have to be more careful. Some ppl use spax. Some use wood screws.

Just dont jerk the screw with the drill, avoid impact drills (IMO), go slow so you dont break the head off.

While not being an expert at SPL stuff, I would think that loosening up the spider and surround a bit beforehand a subwoofer would perform with greater volume than a fresh out of the box unplayed sub.  It would take a bit more power to overcome the greater stiffness of the new sub, power that would be more effectively used with a 'broken in' subwoofer.  For competition purposes.

For the street, just bump that shit.  If it blows, get a warranty replacement!
