The answer is “it could be anything (heat, humidity, bad batch of material, etc), but you got 8 yrs of use so thats not a bad deal”. All the possible reasons are things you cant control anyway. Unless you specifically wiped them with windex or some shit like that. At that point it depends on how well you take care of the equipment, 8 years is pretty good.
