Jahlg64
I haul my tools for work everyday in my van. Got some used equipment at a great price. Kicker zx375.4 and a zx400.1 also a l5 12 also kicker. Running focal auditor 6.5 components front and focal auditor 6x9 rear. The sub is Ina small premade ported enclosure I believe made by kicker. It is running at 2ohms as it a dual 4ohm voice coil. I' having issues with how I want to design a box. I like very punchy bass and sometimes boom bass. With such a large cabin I think I need to go sealed, not sure. I know it' not the best equipment but for the price it' decent. I have the zx750.1 thst I'm throwing it at the sub that should almost double power. Any help on what may work?
Hellbilly429
Would need your max dimensions that you would allow the box to be built to for anyone to help you out. Kicker recommends the following box sizes for that sub (ported) Compact: 1.75 cu/ft; 2.5"x13.25" port opening; 22.5" port length; each coil can handle up to 375 watts RMS (750 watts peak) Street Bass: 2.5 cu/ft; 2.5"x13.25" port opening; 16.5" port length; each coil can handle up to 375 watts RMS (750 watts peak) SPL/Deep Bass: 3.25 cu/ft; 3"x13.25" port opening; 14.5" port length; each coil can handle up to 375 watts RMS (750 watts peak) You will probably find a lot of hate on that sub, but it will get decent loud on moderate power, just don't push more than rated and make sure you are not sending clipped signal to it. Would definitely highly recommending engaging that 25hz subsonic filter on that zx750.1. I ran pretty close to the specs they recommonded above (believe I was closer to 2 ft^3) at 40hz for my ex's car, and it did really well above 30hz. 2018 Honda Civic Sport Hatchback (build in progress) NVX Sound Deadener (Front Doors) Stinger FAST Rings Stock Electrical SSA Evil 6.5's Front Speakers Stock rear speakers MB Quart ONX4.80 speaker amp Rockford Fosgate T-1500bdcp DC Level 4 12" D1 @ 2-ohm Box In Design Stage Stock RadioMy Build Log
Jahlg64
Yeah, it' not my first choice for a sub, but I got a great deal on everything and it will have to do. I can go pretty big on the enclosure, its in the back of the van, so I can go on the higher end of sizes recommended. Just wondering if sealed would help project the sound forward. It souems right now it' louder outside the van then inside. When I roll the windows down its definitely louder then when closed. The enclosure is more like a pickup truck box size, I'm thinking maybe that's choking the output?
Hellbilly429
What kind of music do you listen to predominately? This sub will get "muddy" sounding when on the larger size of boxes. My suggesting, with 750 watts going to it (we had only 400 going to it and it did well) would be to err on the smaller side to keep a flat response, which will also be "punchier." Kicker's recommendations tune the box really high, so would need to know musical preferences before suggesting a box. The reason that prefab box most likely sucks is because it is tuned to high with too little of port area, and is most likely made out of 1/2" particle board, which is not strong or thick enough, and not the most acoustic material. 2018 Honda Civic Sport Hatchback (build in progress) NVX Sound Deadener (Front Doors) Stinger FAST Rings Stock Electrical SSA Evil 6.5's Front Speakers Stock rear speakers MB Quart ONX4.80 speaker amp Rockford Fosgate T-1500bdcp DC Level 4 12" D1 @ 2-ohm Box In Design Stage Stock RadioMy Build Log
Hellbilly429
That sub has a very short usable range with 750 watts being put to it where it won't hit max, or try to go over max excursion. I like it in an L Port box with the below specs. Graphs well in WinISD with 750 watts applied to it, 25hz subsonic filter engaged, and 80hz lowpass filter engaged (these are a must in order to keep the sub from reaching xmax and bottoming out.) usable from 25hz-up. ~~~~BOX DESIGN~~~~ -------BOX------ Box Height: 15'' Box Height 2: N/A'' Box Width: 30'' Box Depth: 15'' Box Depth 2: N/A'' -------PORT------ Port Height: 13.5'' Port Width: 2.5'' Port Length: 40'' Length of External Port: 0'' Physical Port Length: 36.00'' Number of Extra Baffles: 1 Baffle Thickness: 0.75'' Baffle Displacement: 0.17 ft³ Sub Displacement: 0.13 ft³ Bracing Displacement: 0 ft³ Gross Volume: 3.01 ft³ Port Volume: 0.82 ft³ Port Area Per Cube: 17.83 in² Port Area: 33.75 in² Net Volume: 1.89 ft³ Tuning Frequency: 32.29 Hz ~~~~CUT SHEET~~~~ ------BOX------ Top: 30'' x 15'' Bottom: 30'' x 15'' Sides (x2): 13.5'' x 13.5'' Front/Back: 30'' x 13.5'' Back Height: N/A Angled Piece: N/A ------PORT------ Port Top/Bottom: Too complex to display Port Side(s): Too complex to display 2018 Honda Civic Sport Hatchback (build in progress) NVX Sound Deadener (Front Doors) Stinger FAST Rings Stock Electrical SSA Evil 6.5's Front Speakers Stock rear speakers MB Quart ONX4.80 speaker amp Rockford Fosgate T-1500bdcp DC Level 4 12" D1 @ 2-ohm Box In Design Stage Stock RadioMy Build Log
Jahlg64
I listen to just about everything. Rock to rap, big band to jazz. And everything in between. I plan in keeping the gain on the 750 turned down. Dont want to do any damage. I have the 400.1 hooked to it right now. Going to build the new enclosure first. Then try the 750. Hellbilly429
I think the box above would do what you are looking for, if the dimensions work for you. 2018 Honda Civic Sport Hatchback (build in progress) NVX Sound Deadener (Front Doors) Stinger FAST Rings Stock Electrical SSA Evil 6.5's Front Speakers Stock rear speakers MB Quart ONX4.80 speaker amp Rockford Fosgate T-1500bdcp DC Level 4 12" D1 @ 2-ohm Box In Design Stage Stock RadioMy Build Log
Jahlg64
I measured where the box will go, 15 is a little taller then I'd like. My magliner cart will rest on the top of the box. With the sub on the side I'd like to stay around 12-12.5 high. Can go up to 20 width and length can be up to 40-45ish. That would still leave me the room for my tool boxes and bucket and protect the sub from damage. I appreciate you helping me. I don' have a program to plug in the numbers. I have the tools and talent to build it right. Got more tools then I know what to do with. So if you fire me in the right direction. That would be epic of you to do. Then you could give me some advice on my summer car that need a lot of help. Mainly in the amp and speakers and the sub rattling the bees us out of the car
Hellbilly429
You cannot go 12-12.5 inches high with a sub that has an outside diameter of 12 9/16", and a cutout size of 11", especially with 3/4" material. You would probably want a minimum of 13", and that would be tight. You'll need to take into consideration screw/nail placement when putting the box together around where the sub will mount since this is not a round sub, and you cannot turn the sub to re-align the mount holes to miss any screws coming through from the top/bottom panels. ~~~~BOX DESIGN~~~~ -------BOX------ Box Height: 13'' Box Height 2: N/A'' Box Width: 20'' Box Depth: 26'' Box Depth 2: N/A'' -------PORT------ Port Height: 11.5'' Port Width: 3'' Port Length: 40'' Length of External Port: 0'' Physical Port Length: 35.50'' Number of Extra Baffles: 1 Baffle Thickness: 0.75'' Baffle Displacement: 0.2 ft³ Sub Displacement: 0.13 ft³ Bracing Displacement: 0 ft³ Gross Volume: 3.02 ft³ Port Volume: 0.85 ft³ Port Area Per Cube: 18.72 in² Port Area: 34.50 in² Net Volume: 1.84 ft³ Tuning Frequency: 32.98 Hz ~~~~CUT SHEET~~~~ ------BOX------ Top: 20'' x 26'' Bottom: 20'' x 26'' Sides (x2): 11.5'' x 24.5'' Front/Back: 20'' x 11.5'' Back Height: N/A Angled Piece: N/A ------PORT------ Port Top/Bottom: Too complex to display Port Side(s): Too complex to display Download Torres Tuning Calculator from this forum (it is free) and you can mess around with box designing, especially if your sub manufacturer posts recommended box sizes, tuning, and port area like Kicker does.
