Newest Battery Technologies

Recommended Posts

Im hoping to keep this thread bumped with the latest and greatest in battery technology.  For general information, this is the best possible repository for battery information: http://batteryuniversity.com/

I just received a company newsletter stating that Niobium-doped Titanium Oxide (NTO) was the latest variation on lithium batteries that my employer is seeking to produce and use in the near future for industrial electronic applications.  Concerning titanium oxide (aka lithium titanate, or LTO), I reviewed Toshiba's previous SCiB battery technology (LTO) and it was not suitable for in-car applications for a few reasons:

- low cell voltage compared to popular car audio varieties (2.3V/cell... I am not familiar with JB or other  car audio based LTO brands)

- oxide-based battery has history of burning in a catastrophic failure (some will argue with me but its just not as safe as LiFePo4)

- unobtainable (Toshiba wont sell these to a layman like myself, they will only sell to corporations that have a justified need for this battery technology)

- batteries must be purchased in large 48V blocks, so one would have to buy a lot of battery and disassemble the pack to rewire for car audio needs.

For interest about SCiB, check the pdf in this link: https://www.toshiba.com/tic/datafiles/SCiBBrochure2014Final.pdf

Whether or not the new NTO technology is suitable for car audio, as soon as I get new information about the Niobum doped LTO I'll post it here, for interest.

6S banks are useful at high 14V, a couple guys using them charge at 15.5

7S banks should be excellent for 18V.   Get you an 18V bank, charge @ 18.5-18.9 and pull a terminal at 5S to power vehicle and other stuff that won't be happy with high voltage

LTO is considered even safer than LiFePO4.  a quick google search will provide videos of them being grossly abused with no catastrophic (read fire) type failures.

Toshiba cells can be found used scrapped out of EVs, but as you say, not only will they not sell to anybody who isn't using tons of them in big scale manufacturing they won't sell them to you until you send someone to Toshiba to be trained!   Altairno cells are a little easier to obtain though and there's a couple Chinese companies making them.

That said, I bought some cells from China recently and just installed them this weekend.  There's some other folks using these now and apparently a group on Faceberg just made a large order for them.

I'm super impressed so far.  I have a very large Korean amp here.   Replaced 3 110AH and 5 55ah AGMs with these.   Previouisly bass race for 30 seconds would drop me from 14.4 to 12 or below, these drop barely .2V (240AH bank).

What brand are they look a bit like Yinlong lithium?

They are the YingLong brand.   I was looking into LTO and saw some fellas in Russia using these claiming very good results.  I bought mine through Shenzhen Baiguan Battery Co., Ltd  off of Alibaba.   I was very happy with service and communication and everything arrived as described.    As an update I think the guys at Wolfram organized the recent group buy of these cells also through that vendor.

we drop from 17.9, to 16.4 on bad days. After 3min full tilt runs. :(

so sad  :(

Next on my agenda is more subs (somehow).  My subs get pretty warm before I can drop more than .2V.  Lack of battery reserve is probably why these subs have survived as long as they have for me.  By the time subs got stinky before I'd need to give it a rest because my voltage would get so low.

This will be done cleaner at some point whenever I'm caught up with work and get the second amp back.
