Lets Talk About Vintage Car Audio

Recommended Posts

.....of course im probably the only one on here thats old enough to remember though. :D

I was just going through some of my old car audio magazines from the late 80's and early 90's ran across ALOT of old companies that most people have never heard of today.

Who remembers SEX Drivers? Their slogan was "Sex Drivers, they put out". lol

Back then almost every brand of equipment on the market was really good stuff and there were just as many different brands as there are today. The only brands that were really low quality at the time (that i can think of right now) were Pyramid, Legacy, Urban Audio, and Hot Shots. The difference was these lower end brands were made in China and the good brands were made in the U.S. or Japan. Now they are all made in China!

In my opinion, 1989 to about 1995 was the greatest era of car audio. The equipment was fantastic and EVERYONE had huge systems. All the magazines were filled with cars and trucks loaded with a minimum of 10 subs. Everyone had walls. Even in the little town of 10k people that i was in there were walls everywhere and no one was afraid to drop 5-10k on a system.

I remember The Weekly Reader had an article on "Boom Cars" and it showed a truck with a wall full of all sizes of drivers. plain paper cones with acordian surrounds. 1 10" sub and a tweet today prolly puts out more than all them combined, and there were speakers everywhere!

I'm not all THAT old....but....

I am 26 (born in August 1981)

I STARTED working on my older brother's 1st car (1990 Hyundai Sonata) when I was 12, 13, 14yo as I picked more and more tools with "my allowence", 1st job $$$, and what I could scrape together.

I can remember Soundstream Reference series (My 1st amp was a ref604...Still have 2-3 Ref 500's), Kicker and the ROUND solobarics (made by credence... yea baby!) and When Fosgate POWER series with the giant chrome mags and HUGE 2" vent in the mag/pole piece gave me a BOOOOOONER!...ALL RUN off some 250m^2s and 500m's were... the best shit EVER.

CA&E was the bible...and AS&E was porn.

Lanzar "came out" w/ OptiDrive stuff, and '93 Civic cpe's were demo cars.

Kick pods were like OMG! INSANITY.

x2 on WALLS everywhere.

And if you dint have 6+ woofers you were a Fehg...or just not doin anywhere NEAR big.

Man I gotta go break open some old Mags now.

Thnx for startin a good thread I can't believe I never dove in this one B4.

All the more reason to listen when the old folk drop knowledge.

Always a chance to learn somthin.

Man I want some Hafler 8s for my doors.

Also there was this guy in Santa Barbara Ca. which is 45 mins from me. He invented this thing that turns your windows into tweeters. the homos at isaca (or what ever) banned his tweeters so his sells fell so far down he had to stop making them and sold the patents to JBL (I think) Then JBL just set on the patents. Id love to get a set of those window tweets.

Na the critacle mas things excites a piece of metal or something. The glass mount tweeters literately glue to your windows and puts electricity threw your glass. Your glass inturn flawlessly reproduces the High end part of your music. All off of a 35 watt watt amp. Back in the day we were buying them for 150 bucks. The only draw back is that the highs come off both sides of the glass so when your windows are up your highs can be herd down the street lol
