Psi problems

Recommended Posts

Been breaking in a psi platform 2 18" for a few days. Now its blown and I'm sure it has to be a defect.  Upgraded to 1800 watts. Running off a crescendo bc 2000. Batteries are two shuriken 4500's. No voltage problems what so ever. Straight out of the box the sub got warm at medium volume. Slight smell of adhesive/maybe coil? Day 2 Ran up the volume a bit higher. Played half an hour. No clipping I have indicators in the amp. Then it smoked not locked up but the coil is trash. Emailed the company twice now with no response. Funny they don't take calls. Is this sub garbage or what.

1. Clipping indicators in the amp do nothing. Use a proper tool to set gains like a DD-1
2. Don't rule out a shitty box as a source for blowing the sub
3. Just because you believe your amp wasn't clipping doesn't mean something upstream wasn't
4. What are you hoping to accomplish here? A bitching thread doesn't go far around these parts
5. Welcome to the forums

Playing clipped sources of music will kill a sub quickly.

Always check your music on windows media player with scope to see if it is clipped.

Soft clipped music is ok at lower volumes, but hard clips will kill a sub even at lower volumes.

Thanks for the responses. I've run several brands of subs with less power ratings with the same amp and played the same music at much higher volumes. Again I was breaking it in with no bass boost. Don't feel it was clipped or distorted. I'm not sure if a coil can just delam or what? Went to an american bass hd 18 and has been flawless. Want to communicate with psi but can't get a response. Wouldn't even be a thing if I thought I torched it.

Could be what happened to me when I had 2 Kicker 15in Competition subs back in 1999, the glue was not set on the voice coils which caused them to go quit quickly, i would get maybe 2 days play outta them and I was only running them both off a PPI PC300 bridged an the subs were 8ohms down to a 4ohm load.

Come to find out when I called Kicker about it since the place I had bought them refused to warrant a 3rd pair, the glue was changed to a different kind and they were having mass issues with it not drying and the voice coils was not sticking like it was supposed to.

I would be careful about ever using bass boost, broken in or not. It's not very useful unless and clips the signal really quickly.
