Yeah i been looking at those, none really have any power handling tho, im all kindsa overkill, 110 rms to each speaker ( 330 a door lol).  Just pulled my speaker and its actually good, dont know if i got a pinched wire or signal cable. Gonna gut whole.truck and start over soon with all good stuff and taped to floor and rputed correctly this time, did it half assed last time nd now im paying the price. Going to eventually replace the door speakers with something that has more sq tho so am still on the hunt.

Aren't ds18's budget friendly already? In terms of dollar to watt? Hard to find a cheap 4" mid that will take 110rms active without worrying.

For sure hard to find one thatll take that power. And these i have are pro4.4bm or something like that and are like $30 a piece, they are dumb loud and clear. They are just harsh in upper middle frequencies, i may try out a set of thier "sq" 4" and see if they are a bit smoother. My 6.5 is nice through all its freqs, and the ds18 tweeter isnt even harsh,  juat that 4" is hard to even eq the harshness out of it.

Thing about active is the speakers are going to do exactly what you make them do, the EQ, phasing/distance between drivers and crossover slopes can make a significant difference with most in-car setups.

If your midrange is harsh beyond 1.5-2khz you could always experiment with driver phase, placement or a tweeter that can play lower.

It took me a very long time until i found an active setup that i like, i usually end up selecting drivers that can compliment each other so i don't need to worry about harshness near my xover points.

I've use some moderately priced in ear monitors almost daily for 10+ years and it drives me nuts chasing the same type of sound in my vehicles, i usually get close enough to not bitch about it but sometimes with 3 way front stage it can be a real challenge when your on a budget.

Yeah, ive been through a ton of different speakers, did a passive 3 way in my buddies cherokee with infinity components, added a 3 1/2" infinity in dash and used an audiopipe 3 way xover and it sounds amazing. Totally flat eq on headunit ( has 65x4 for doors, so each 3 way up front gets 65 and rear coaxials get 65 each) sound amazing. I mean they are reference series but they make me envious still. Those ds18s are pro audio atuff so they sound different i guess

i might check the output of your active crossover, make sure that channel is still working.  nice part about active is you have a straight line to trace back to find the problem.  which model crossover are you running the doors off of anyway?  im curious for myself

nice, yeah i'd grab a voltmeter and check the output of the channel in question, make sure the rca is still working

also if you have a DD-1 i'd double check your level adjustments to make sure you're not clipping.  those knobs twisted to max level would concern me
