k58.cross
I got the idea in my head to watch the output voltage of the amp, which is going to be AC in the range of 0-45V. Wanting to do this because I'm wiring to low impedance and so the amp will run well under clipping but still need to be careful how much power is delivered to the sub. So in watching the output voltage I can use the bass knob to keep power in the range I want it. I tried searching but can't find a good option for a dedicated meter I can hook up in the car and mount on the dash. Do you guys know any good ones? CrackFactory
I've used these with success in the past. Surprisingly accurate and fast reaction. But no lights and if you look at it from an angle you can't read it very well because it's a needle. But they are cheap as dirt. SMD OM-1 is obviously superior, I'm just showing you there are other options.https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/TE206TI
k58.cross
Thanks I'll probably try that aliexpress one. I would get an OM-1 but hot damn they're expensive. I know they're good but $90 is a bit much for a dash meter. Do they include a donut in order to derive power or are they voltage only?
CrackFactory
They just have + and - on the back. I hooked them up directly to the speaker outputs on the amp. Expect to wait 3-4 weeks for delivery from aliexpress.
k58.cross
Finding some alternatives on eBay. I just got this square 0-50VAC meter. Will let you guys know how well it works. https://www.ebay.com/itm/US-Stock-AC-0-50V-Square-Analog-Volt-Pointer-Needle-Panel-Meter-Voltmeter-XT-72/

k58.cross
Yeah it's a bit ghetto lol I know. Just trying to do the same thing the OM-1 would do for cheaper (minus the light show aspect).
rocking.that.eclipse
My personal opinion is set with dd1 to not clip and then let it ride. What will the ac voltage really tell you in the end?
k58.cross
I am wired low, 0.5 ohms on an amp that is only rated down to 1 ohm. Due to the low impedance, the output voltage is lower for the same amount of power. This means the amp will be less likely to clip, BUT there is more headroom for power now. I could burn the amp out or it could go into protect often. The solution is to limit the output power - which I can do on the fly song to song by means of a bass knob and output level meter (AC output voltage monitor). Why not measure the output current you ask? Because it's a relatively high current and would require more equipment than the voltage.
