Blaupunkt Retarded Budget Build - $150 SPL Challenge

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, I'm a long-time lurker, first-time poster. Some of you may have seen this "build" on other forums (screen name JLJunkieMX107).

Long story short, last year they had Blaupunkt 8" subs on sale for $13 a piece. I bought 10 of them and decided to throw 8 of them in a transmission line. This is just all in good fun to see what these little f**kers can do. In true budget fashion, I paired them up to an audiopipe apmi-2k. They originally went into a 2014 Ram 1500 but are now currently installed in a 2009 Jeep Liberty (in a wall).

Anyhow, I am about to dump a bunch of pics because that's what everyone really cares about seeing....

The truck, bone stock 2014 Ram 1500

Got her in the shop, time to do work

Here's everything that went in today. I needed to get a better HU in the truck but didn't want to spend a fortune. Ended up getting a Kenwood KDC-x399 for $50 at a pawn shop. Using a Metra double din install kit, to include their CAN bus wiring kit (this **** was so much simpler in the 90's). Also had to a get an antenna adapter

Ripped the dash apart, that stock HU needs to go

Almost ready to put in the new HU, however, that dang aluminum housing is in the way (won't let the new HU slide in). Also, staying refreshed with a nice can of Oberon :D

The two lines are where I need to cut. This oscillating tool has been my savior on so many projects, zipped right through the aluminum like butter. Also, I have sliced my hand open too many times on sharp edges, swapped out attachments and sanded this crap down.

Aaaaand the "new" HU is in and functioning, sounds so much better than the stock one too. Can't wait to get the subs/amp to get a little bass going.

Here is what I've got to work with for space on this build. I've got 15.8 cubic feet, maybe a little more if I want to breach the window line. I only need 12 cubes for these subs (doing a kerfed slot port).

Here is a bonus for some of you old school guys on here. We recently moved into our current house and the previous owners were kind enough to leave a few boxes of random junk in the garage. Today, I finally got around to looking through it all and found this little gem hiding in there. In the 90's, these Aura MR-5's were the shiznit. Unfortunately, I only have one of the midbass speakers and not the whole set of components :( It's still a nice little speaker to have around the shop, brings back memories

It's starting to look like a box :D. I would have been able to finish tonight but my jasper jig broke. Won't be able to cut out the holes for the subs until I pick up a new one tomorrow.

The box is done, took longer than expected so I can't test it tonight, still have to run all the wires in my truck. Anyways, here it is. The subs will be inverse mounted

It's done and installed. Holy hell, this thing is loud for what it is. Haven't even cranked it all the way up and my wipers were slapping. I forgot to order decent speaker wire so it's on some pretty crappy stuff right now. Anyways, here are a couple of vids. I'll post a more detailed "review" later

This thing is about spot on to where buck tuned it. To the ear, it seems to really resonate at around 35hz. Still cannot believe these are $13 subs, absolute beast at this price. I rode around for about 20 min with it blasting and no issues so far

Carpeted the box and updating my speaker wire (8 gauge now instead of 18). I'm also building an amp rack so this thing isn't just bolted to the floor. I think this box needs a logo, way too much open real estate on the front of this thing.

Now, for the real question....what does it hit on the meter? I tested it with my SPL Labs wireless meter, mic in the passenger kick. Overall, not SUPER impressive, but not bad considering how much was spent on the equipment.

My highest score in the truck was 142.4. This was with hardly any testing, it went up a little bit....however...I ripped everything out of the truck

And the final update, this is where I am currently at. I ended up slicing the enclosure and making it into two separate boxes. Everything is being installed into a 2009 Jeep Liberty. The 2 enclosures are big enough that it makes a wall in the jeep. I haven't done much testing but it did a 145.7 in the jeep from just slapping it in there (videos below). With a little more tinkering, I think I can get a couple more dB out of this thing.
