AB es1244, port recommendations/ review

Recommended Posts

So got my new system about 90% installed and playing with my new subs. I have never had a shallow mount sub, but these American bass es 12s are pretty impressive. Tossed them in a prefab I had sitting around (2.25 cubes each side tuned at 32hz with 2.75" inner diameter port), and they sound really really good except I can't really crank em cause the box is almost 3 times to big for each sub ( .75 each us specs). I also have a prefab for under the seat that is .91 each side, and is sealed. Subs sound ok but again can't really crank them because u can tell they don't like the sealed box. I am going to cut port holes into the prefab and try and tune it as low as I can . I have 3" PVC ( 2.75 inside diameter) but to get to the low 30s I needs to be longer than the box is deep, if I use an elbow to get the length I think the box volume will get too small for the sub. Longest I can get the 3" port is 12.25" ( think it gives 34ish hz) because the box is only 15" deep front to back.  I found these aero ports and wondering if it will be a better choice than the pvc?

Plz excuse my ignorance with aeroports, but would I use 3" as the diameter for calculating tuning? Those r 11.5" long and 3" at smallest diameter and that gives me a tune of like 39hz.

Since the PVC isn't flared at the ends you have a higher chance of port noise so the aero port would be better in that regard. Yet the aero may have a very slightly higher tuning frequency at the same length as PVC due to the flares. I've read that when measuring length of a flared port you only include half of the flares.

In your application I doubt it would make much of a difference. If it were me I would pick the aero. Another thought is extending the port out of the box a bit to regain lost volume or just get a little lower tuning frequency.

I didn't think about port protruding outside of the box, I can add about 1.5" outside before it looks horrible and gets in the way. I'm going to heat and flare my PVC and get it as low as possible. Going to deal with it as long as it takes to buy some vfl8s ( at least 4 of em) and I have a few buddies with same truck so I'm sure I can off this box and subs relatively quickly, that is unless porting this box just makes a HUGE difference. My initial plan was using vfls anyways, just took a chance with the es12s cause I was unsure how low the 8s would get. Just put some vfl8s in a buddies truck and they get good and low so that option is back on the table . Thanks for all the help, will post pics and videos when I finish it up . Hopefully it sounds good and that's the end of it, I have more tied up in my "work trucks" stereo than the truck was bought for as it is already!

Well ported the prefab, did NOT make a huge difference , not happy at all with the outcome. If I didn't own a xfl on 2k before this I might have been happy, but when 2 12s on 2800 don't sound half as good a a single 12 on 2000 there is a BIG problem. Need ideas now, going to raise the seat at least 2 inches and at bare minimum put an xfl10 under it. But man I'm daunted  and need advice asap. HAVE TO HAVE my back seat tho.
