Beefing Up Electrical In An Audi B8 A4

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I'm new to the forums, but not all too new to car audio, just went on hiatus for a few years.

So, the story goes, I managed to pick up two mint Kicker Solo X 18s from a guys storage locker and would like to put them to use... But I have a problem, I drive a 2011 Audi A4 with the 2.0 TFSi engine, I've been looking at trading it in/off on something a bit bigger, but it's just not in the cards right now. The  2.0 engine comes with a 140 amp alternator and I know quite well that this just won't be enough to meet my power demands of ~5,000 watts RMS.

I've been scouring the internet in search of at least a 250 amp replacement, but I've come up short handed. So, if anyone has any experience with the Audi platform and has some insight into what options I may have to combat power draw, I would be eternally grateful!

I've been looking into getting the OEM alternator rewound, but the quotes I've been given are enough to make my stomach turn. If it makes any difference, I am in Canada and availability of certain things is fairly limited compared to you lucky folks in the US.

Thanks in advance for any and all help!

Mechman, Singer, US alts come to mind. Reach out and see if they can't offer a custom quote. HO Alts are usually in the range of 400+ for a good one. Mine was around 500 something if I remember right through mechman.

Goodluck man, especially with two 18s in such a small car!

Thanks for the info, I'll fire off some emails and see what they can offer!

I'm a little nervous to see how much and how quickly these monsters tear my car apart...

Just run it as is. I'm sure working on, that rig, would suck. Run as is, add reserve as necessary.

Edit- what board are you gonna run?

The car isn't all too bad to work on, the only thing I need to overcome is the use of an optics cable to the factory amplifier if I choose to run components.

I'm thinking in the meantime I'll see how I can hold out with a couple of Kinetik HC1200s. The car comes stock with a pretty beefy battery as is and I replaced it with a much better one already, so three should give me some decent capacity.

Sorry I'm a little off on the lingo having been out of the hobby for a while... If you mean wood, it'll be 1" MDF all around with corner bracing.

If you mean amplifiers, I havent decided yet. I may go budget on it and run a couple of Rockville RXD-M5s until I can get a little more spendy on something better. Though, I've been told by a few people that as long as I can keep up on the Rockvilles power demands, I shouldn't have any problems with them in the long term as far as burning up.
