2005 Tahoe - No Wall 161+ dB Daily (8 12s, 40kw, kick)

Recommended Posts

whelp. I told myself when I bought this truck in June 2019 that I wasn't gonna do a build.... you can guess how that turned out

2005 Tahoe LS w/ 136k miles and relatively little rust in Michigan -$5500 cash

1st thing to do was start plasti-dipping some stuff, then tint it out, 5% windows, 35% windshield

plasti-dipped the bumper and grille, and got tinted headlights

then I ended up buying a 4 18 walled truck that I intended to abuse instead of the daily

had it with a stock alt, 95aH Cmax, 4 SoundQubed HDC318s, and a Taramps MD 8k @ 2 ohms

we clamped like 2400w out of it dropping to 11v...having a world of issues with electrical in that build

I got fed up with it and sold it shortly. not even sure I took any videos of that build.

before I sold it, I designed a box for 6 15s for the daily, and threw it in there and ran the subs into the walled tahoe for a quick vid and testing

did low 51s and then I got bored and sold that too

after I sold the walled 4 18 truck and the 6 15s, I decided to start getting ready for a real build in the daily

Noico 80mil from Amazon, 2 layers on the doors, 3-4 layers throughout the roof

ended up buying some doors off facebook that were a huge mess

paid like $750 shipped and insured, then the guy said he needed extra for shipping and insurance... and my dumb ass paid him.

he said the speakers he used would fit without any cutting of the door panel.... was not the case

when they arrived, they were all damaged from shipping, and didn't fit at all

was able to get a full refund through PayPal (thank god) and ran them for like a month while the claim settled

from there, I was offered the opportunity to buy my old 4 18 no wall back - some of you may remember it from my 2018 build log

1.thumb.JPG.c04fb918270e415672ab99cef994e562.JPG

in the old days I had:

4 SounDrive SDA3 18s

Ampere 7500 @ 0.5

320a CES alt

100ah AGM

40aH homemade old school dIY lithium

did like 52s on the glass, 53s outlaw and I thought I was so loud..

so naturally I had to buy it back because nostalgia told me it was the loudest no wall setup ever

I also bought a 270a Brand X Alt, and a Limitless Lithium G10 which almost conveniently fit in the OEM box area

and some of the (at the time) brand new SoundQubed HDX3 18s:

on a fantastic Audiopipe APMI 2k @ 0.5

in this video I had just stock alt and the oem lead acid:

I think it did around 144s, and was charging super low

hooked up the G10, still on stock alt (not a great idea)

I actually then ran the truck for about 2 weeks with the stock alt, and the G10 being the only battery hooked up. several times I'd walk out to the truck before work and it would be completely dead.

ended up being that the 2005 vehicles have some PCM alternator thing where it was only charging at 12V

once I got sick of my truck dying every morning, and before I figured out how to fix the alternator throttling (keep your low beams on 24/7 or drive in tow haul mode), I added a 2nd alt so I could have an isolated charging system

spacer.png

I added 2 diodes to charge higher

spacer.png

but was still only getting 14.5v in the car....

turns out I didn't read the eBay ad for my BlueGhost bracket, and I needed to ground somewhere other than my alt bracket

I added a run of 2/0 from the OEM alt bolt to the Brand X one, and was good to go:

at this point I went ahead and swapped the APMI 2k for a SoundQubed 7k

I bought one of those cheap SPL Lab meters and started messing around with short music and burps for the first time. (previously all my scores were recorded solely on music, no clipping cus I was scared to damage anything)

didn't really mess with the HDX318s much. you can see my best score with them was a 153.1 on the glass (driver window down), dropping from 14.9v to about 12.3v on a single G10 lithium and Brand X 270a

shortly after getting all that setup, I got the opportunity to buy 4 ZV318s

I'd always heard ZV3s were like the best sub ever, and they were supposed to be good in small spaces (my box was 5 cubes per sub net)

around this time, I got some of my old doors back that Correy Fanson built (I lent them to my sister while I dealt with the dispute on those awful 3 10 doors)

4 8s and 2 tweets per

went with Eminence Alpha 8A and Selenium ST-200s

don't really have any videos of those doors on the Audiopipe 4095, as my usual demo spot got shut down

only got 1 video of the ZV318s:

was still intermittently running into electrical / charging issues (thus 14.4V starting and dropping to 12s on music)
