Dafaseles
Today, I cut the holes for the top pieces. The pieces that will "flush mount" the 8's. Basically, I took that template, and used template tape to tape it in place. Then I used my flush trim bit to cut the holes out. One done Then I used the template tape to tape the done piece to the second top piece and cut out the holes to be in the same place. Mirror images damn near ROUTER FOR THE WIN! Then I had to use some wood filler for some grooves I messed up and made. No biggie. Once it dries, I'll and it flat. 2011 Chevy Silverado under construction My build log here. Check it out! Dafaseles
Some late night working. Here's a picture after I fit the back piece onto the front piece. I wish I got pictures of how I went about doing this, but I had my doubts it was going to work, so I was pre bummed I guess lol. Anyway, since both to piece are the same, I traced the speaker holes onto the back piece, flipped it over, then fit that into the top piece for the opposite door, so I had the layout facing me. That helped me plan where the screws would go. Only problem, I didn't leave enough space in some places for screws, including both ends. If I tried to put a screw between the line, and the speaker hole (where the arrow is), there no way I wouldn't split the wood. So I'm going to get some JB weld or some super duper glue, glue those areas, and hope for the best. So I found the middle of the speaker holes and got out the circle big for the router. This was nerve racking because I only have a 16th of an inch to play with for the speaker holes. If the mounting holes where too off, it's junk. Start over.... again. But couldn't stop. Had to keep going and be confident I was right. And I was! Here, you can see the final top and bottom married. I tell you what...I couldn't wait. I dry fitted every hole with a single speaker to make sure everything lined up. It did. I had to see 4 8's in this thing at once for no other reason, I was happy! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! I'm still looking at it lol. and they sit nice and flush! Looks good nice and close too On to the other side 2011 Chevy Silverado under construction My build log here. Check it out!
Dafaseles
Then went ahead and did the drivers side. To say this side was easier than the passenger side would be an understatement. I started by lining up the 2 back piece and mirroring the drill holes for the screws. Then screwing them together Next, I drilled some holes, got out the old flush trim bit and went to work Made a mirror image damn near So then, the real question, when I marry this backing to its front... will the speaker mount holes line up with the speaker holes in the top piece? Muthaphukin success! (I did check every hole with the speaker lol) Boom goes the dynamite! That part is done. Still a ways to go for the doors though, but I'll celebrate any victory at this point. Next, I'm going to start working on the baffle for the tweeters. I have an idea what I want to do. Hopefully it all fits. Well, it's 1:55 am on December 22nd. I'm done for the night. Time to take a shower and play the tooth fairy. My oldest (5) lost her first tooth today. These kids need to stop growing 🤣 2011 Chevy Silverado under construction My build log here. Check it out! Dafaseles
Some more late night working getting done tonight. It's cold as shit! I think this might be the way I get 90% off my work done from now on. Anyway.... Started by taking the mounting plate off my tweeter, and using that as a template to draw the placement on the baffle. The hole in the middle is where the tweeter dome is. So next I found the center of that circle. I used that as the center point for cutting the mounting hole in the baffle. All the holes ended up being very uniform and exactly the same size. Router for the win again! Then, just for some style, I angled the edges to be very close the the edge of the tweeter mounting plate. It will be a very tight fit, but the extra space I'm saving by making everything so close will be worth it in the end. So, the tweeters will be mounted from the back of the baffle. Next I want to make a trim piece that will be fixed to the top of the baffle, that will also house the speaker grill. Unlike the grill insert for the 8's, this will be permanent. The silk dome is so fragile on these tweeters, once they're in the door, they won't be seen again until it's time to change them. Hopefully I can get that trim piece done tomorrow night. 2011 Chevy Silverado under construction My build log here. Check it out!
Dafaseles
Made another tweeter baffle tonight Then I made 2 more identical solid pieces that I will cut into the mount for the grill for the tweeters. I had to start by figuring out exactly where the tweeters will sit. So I took the mounting piece of the tweeter again to drill some holes and trace everything into the solid pieces With that done Now it's time to turn to figuring out a design for the grill insert. I don't want it to be boring rectangle. I'll have to turn on the creative juices that really don't exist in my mind lol. Anyone have any ideas? 2011 Chevy Silverado under construction My build log here. Check it out!
