Lithium batteries

I've been out of the game for over 5 years, not by choice. I'm on my way back in and have big plans. I see cap banks and lithium batteries have taken front row. I'm looking on a good read about lithium batteries and cap banks.... Just some general information to help me along the way. I currently own 2 DC Audio XL M2's with the AR upgrades, folded former, and aluminum coil. I want to power them on about 6k. I've shopped around for an alternator, seems like a 270amp is in favor but again still new to the brands out now and who's who and what's good and what's not. anyway, any help or information is much appreciated.

Hey lifted, if you were driving a Toyota Camry or something, then I probably wouldn't say this.... But I assume your lifted Ford truck has a V8 ?

And if that's the case, I would go with the biggest, baddest alternator you can find. Honestly, if it were me, I'd go with two big bad ass alternators if I intended to run 6Kwts. But if only one, then I'd shoot for at least a 420... Heck, Mechman makes a 500 now 😉 

Okay, so I'm only running a 320amp Pro Power alt. Love it. But I should have gotten the 390.

 

Supercap banks..... I'm totally convinced they are the shit ! Too bad you can't find them any ef'ng where ☹️ I think you can get them from Xs power, for $459... in the battery case box. Or, if ever they come back in stock, you can just get 6 supercaps and connectors from Skyhigh Audio for $300. 

 

Supercaps are getting to be a sore ef'ng subject for me.

You will need a battery charger to charge lithium too. And I would recommend using the biggest alternator you can afford, bigger is always better.  A 270 would work. But why limit yourself when you can go bigger and maintain better?

I haven't spent much time looking at Lithiums lately (as you know I'm not much of a battery guy 😉 lol) but i did read somewhere a while back about Lithium Batts having a max charging rate ? Would the OP be able to run a 390 or 420, or heck, a 500 amp alternator with only one 45ah lithium ?

Yes. But he could run a 270 with that set up and be fine but I would get a 390 just to have more room. But I wouldn’t waste my money on a limitless lithium 45ah battery. I would spend less than half that, way less in some cases, and get a 40ah bank of yinlong LTOs.

If you can only charge at stock voltage, 14.4 range I would go with LiFePo4 chemistry, most common is headway’s. 
 

Say you can fit a dual alternator? Or even want or can run at 15+ volts then get into the LTO or yinlongs instead like 1.21 said
 

either way like fish said pay attention to max charge rates, headway’s can output at 25c or 200a max continuous but can only take 10c or 80a charge per bank if I remember right. LTO is different as well. Banks are made up of cells in series to increase voltage and parallel to increase capacitance or ah rating just like super cap banks are :) 
 

The c rating on a high level means the output / input rate of battery essentially. Some lithium’s have better ones, bigger. But it all depends on application, solar applications would have lower c than auto since we need power instantly vs over time. I’m still learning to make the best decision for my setup and right now that’s looking like headway’s. Honda has me at 14.2v 😅.

 

some run balancers some don’t. Balancers come in either passive or actively managed. I personally won’t use a bank without a balancer because I daily, I don’t compete where I’d see the difference in performance with/without one.

He is gonna be running an aftermarket alternator so he is gonna have a higher voltage than 14.4, even when it’s hot. LTOs charge higher (Just in case he want to run an external regulator and charge at 15.3 or 15.5 volts or something) and they are way cheaper. LTOs are the way to go. But if he wants to spend a lot of money on lifepo4 cells or a battery then it would work just fine with any alternator. But why spend that unnecessary money to get the same results? He can order a 40ah LTO (yinlong) bank from China for less than $250 and some yinlong parts from Jim’s Machineworx for around $100.
