Looking for some advice and design feedback.

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Its been years since I've been on this forum and looking for some advice and suggestions on my latest build attempt. Originally my goal was to buy new DC Sound subs for my build project but I ran into quite a few mishaps with my house, and so all of my new build money went away towards keeping the house afloat. It also didn't help that COVID had for a minute knocked us down to a 1 income home for a few months. Anyway my fiance wanted to surprise me with a gift to help me get back into building sounds systems with the hope of me finally competing after years of wanting to do it but never could for multitude of reasons. Anyway when my fiance went back to work she surprised me with a gift of ordering me 4 CT Sounds Tropo 18's. She knew that I had a goal of running 4 18's this year and wanted to surprise me. She was going to buy me DC's but I could justify the cost at the time cause of the pandemic and not being sure if she would return back to work (thankfully she did).  So anyhow I now have 4 CT Sound Tropo 18's and I'm getting ready to build a box for them this weekend to go in the back of my 2007 Chevy Suburban.
So I've been playing around with SketchUP tonight trying to get my design figured out. My plan is to hopefully start building my box on Friday since I'm off work for the holiday. I came up with a final measurements for my box, and I wanna make sure I'm in the right ballpark. The box should be around 22/23 cft built out of 3/4 MDF with a double baffle for the subs and I'm trying to get the tuning between 34 - 38hz give or take.

So for my outer dimension I came up with  H x D x W ( 24in x 46in x46in). I figured the slot port that would be lower rear hatch firing port is  H x D x W ( 6in x 11.25in x 44.25in).  Again the subs will be firing up and ported to the rear hatch. The 3rd row seat are out so I should have more than enough room to make the box longer depth wise if need be. I guess I'm trying to build the box in a manner where it will work with the Tropo's for now and then hopefully before the year is out and no more home issues, I can finally save up and get the DC XLs and do a direct swap.  So I'm looking for any and all feedback and suggestions. I really wanna get this right the first time if I can.

Besides the Tropo's I'm running 2 older Kicker ZX 2400.1 (2), two Dekka Batteries, and a second factory alternator.

See how this was my post and I can't seem to log into that account, I was able to restore my original SMD account from 2007. Anyhow I've started building the box the last few days and I'm at good stopping point. I need to finish fiber glassing the inside of the box and adding some additional internal bracing before I paint/wrap the box and get it in the suburban.

That’s dope. You should fill in them spots around the cutouts with comic strips and then cutout so it’s like the whole enclosure is covered in comic strips. Then put a “glaze coat” epoxy clear coat over it. Glaze coat is like a thick clear coat

What’s the volume of that enclosure after port

when you take away port displacement as well as woofer displacement its somwhere around 19. I built it closer to 23 with the thought of port taking up at least 1.5 to 2. The bracing and subs themselves would do the rest.

Oh no those spots will be covered by the subs so no need to fill there. And yes I'm covering the box in clear epoxy today. I'm going to probably lay down 2 full coats of epoxy when I'm done.  The sides of the box won't get comic book covering cause:

1. I'm out of comics book materials and I refuse to buy expensive comic books to butcher up. I used cheap $5 Below/Dollar Tree comic books when I started this.

2. No one will really see the sides and back of the box once its in the truck and setup properly.
